SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah's Shona Thorburn was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, earning her third career award.
Thorburn helped Utah to two victories last week as the Utes defeated BYU at home and Colorado State on the road. In a close game against BYU, Thorburn scored 24 points, dished out four assists and tallied five steals. She scored eight points during the Utes' game-deciding 17-2 run over five and a half minutes early in the second half against the Cougars. She was also 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final 1:17 of the game. In the Colorado State contest, Thorburn scored 22 points and had nine assists. She scored 12 first-half points when the Utes built a 39-19 halftime lead. Thorburn made or assisted on 27 of Utah's 52 field goals for the week and she reached the 20-point mark for the eighth time in 12 conference games.
For the week, Thorburn averaged 22.0 points, 6.5 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.0 rebounds per game. She shot 53.8 percent (14-for-26) from the floor, including 50 percent (5-for-10) from three-point land. She was also 11-for-15 (73.3 percent) from the free-throw line.
