Utah vs. Wyoming Fast Breaks
> This is the 57th meeting between Utah and Wyoming on the women's basketball hardwood.
> Utah leads the series 50-6.
> Utah owns a 27-game winning streak against the Cowgirls. Wyoming has not defeated Utah since the 1990 season, when the Cowgirls took two games from the Utes.
> Wyoming hasn't come within 10 points of Utah in the last 14 outings. The Utes have won the last 14 meetings by an average of 19 points.
> Utah won the first meeting this season by a tally of 67-49 at the Huntsman Center. In that game, Shona Thorburn scored 27 points, while Kim Smith tallied 18 points and 12 rebounds. Utah used an 11-0, second-half run to take control of the game.
Utah Head Coach Elaine Elliott
University of Utah head women's basketball coach Elaine Elliott is in her 22nd season at the helm of the Ute program.
Elliott has a career record of 454-183. She is the winningest coach in Utah basketball history. Elliott has led the Utah women to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, eight regular-season conference titles, three divisional crowns and five conference tournament championships. Elliott has been regarded for years as one of the best women's basketball coaches in the country. She has the longest tenure of any coach in the Mountain West Conference.
In 21 years, Elliott has had an astounding 20 winning seasons. She has been named her conference's coach of the year eight different times. Elliott has coached 28 first-team all-conference players and six Players of the Year.
Elliott was named the John and Nellie Wooden National Coach of the Year following the 2000-01 season.
Wyoming Head Coach Joe Legerski
Joe Legerski is in his second season as the head coach of the Wyoming Cowgirls. He has compiled a record of 23-26 with Wyoming.
Prior to taking over the Cowgirl program, Legerski was an assistant coach under Utah head coach Elaine Elliott for 12 seasons. The Utes compiled a 254-96 record while he was an assistant, including seven league titles. They were 135-35 in conference play during his tenure.
In addition to his time at Utah, Legerski also served as an assistant coach at Wyoming and as head coach at Western Wyoming College and Rock Springs High School. Legerski is a 1979 graduate of Wyoming.
In addition to Legerski's Utah ties, former Ute assistant coach Jaime White is now an assistant on the Wyoming staff. Utah assistant coach Matt Legerski is the nephew of Wyoming head coach.
Utah Update
Utah outscored San Diego State 36-11 in the first half of Saturday afternoon's 65-52 victory over the Aztecs at the Huntsman Center.
Kim Smith scored 12 of her game-high 18 points in the first half. Shona Thorburn scored nine of her 15 points and dished out seven of her nine assists in the first 20 minutes.
Utah held a 13-9 advantage midway through the first half. The Utes then busted off a 15-0 run to take a 28-9 advantage. The 15-point Utah outburst led to outscoring San Diego State 23-2 over the final 10:38 of the half.
Utah led by 27 points in the first 20 seconds of the second half, when Smith scored on a jumper. From there, the Utes cruised.
San Diego State never really threatened. Utah still led by 20 points with 2: 27 remaining in the game. The Aztecs scored the final seven points of the game to account for the final margin of 13 points.
Smith tallied her 10th double-double of the season and the 21st of her career. She pulled down 12 boards to go with her 18 points.
Scouting Wyoming
On the floor this season, Wyoming has already won one more game than it did last season. The Cowgirls were 11-18 last year and have compiled a 12-8 mark this season.
Wyoming is coming off a pair of losses. The Cowgirls fell 62-49 at New Mexico Thursday and then dropped a 69-66 decision in overtime at Air Force on Saturday. Wyoming has lost three straight.
The Cowgirls are paced by senior guard Ashley Elliott, who leads the Mountain West Conference in scoring with 16.9 points per game.
Utes Wrap Up First MWC Go-Round
Utah's game with San Diego State on Saturday marked the first trip through the Mountain West Conference. The Utes went through the first half of the conference slate with a 6-1 mark.
This is the fifth time in the six years since the inception of the Mountain West Conference that the Utes have won at least six games in the first trip through the league schedule.
The only time the Utes didn't reach that mark was in 2001-02 when they were 3-4. Utah was 15-12 overall and 8-6 in the MWC that season.
Utes Dominant in MWC Play
Through the first half of the Mountain West Conference schedule, Utah is the top team in many key statistical categories.
After seven conference games, the Utes lead the league in scoring offense (68.0 ppg), scoring defense (52.4 ppg) and scoring margin (+15.6). Utah is also tops in rebounding margin (+6.4).
The Utes are the top shooting team in the conference through the first seven league games. Utah is shooting .442 from the field and .390 from three-point range.
All Over the Charts
Utah junior forward Kim Smith is among the league leaders in virtually every Mountain West Conference statistical category. In fact, she ranks among the top 15 players in 12 of the 13 categories the conference includes in its weekly report.
Smith is the leading rebounder in the conference, pulling down 9.5 caroms per game. She is No. 2 in scoring, tallying 16.7 points per game. She is also tops in the MWC in free-throw percentage (.877) and defensive rebounds (6.41 rpg).
Smith is No. 2 in minutes played (37.32), No. 3 in offensive rebounds (3.09 rpg), No. 5 in field-goal percentage (.489), No. 6 in three-point field-goal percentage (.364), No. 9 in blocked shots (0.68), No. 11 in assists (2.73), No. 12 in three-pointers made (1.27) and No. 13 in steals (1.50).
The only category where Smith is not listed is assist/turnover ratio.

Junior guard Shona Thorburn is the only player in the Mountain West Conference who can rival Smith's statistical rankings. In fact, Thorburn is also ranked in the top 15 in 12 of 13 MWC statistical categories.
Thorburn is the league leader in assists (6.64) and minutes played (37.68). She ranks No. 3 in assist/turnover ratio (2.12), No. 4 in three-point field-goal percentage (.379), No. 5 in three-pointers made (1.50), No. 5 in steals (2.09), No. 6 in scoring (14.7 ppg), No. 6 in defensive rebounds (5.14), No. 7 in rebounding (7.0), No. 13 in field-goal percentage (.414), No. 13 in free-throw percentage (.682) and No. 15 in offensive rebounds (1.86).
The only MWC statistical category in which Thorburn does not crack the top 15 is blocked shots.
