SALT LAKE CITY -- University of Utah head women's basketball coach Elaine Elliott has announced the signing of Sasha McKinnon, a 5-foot 11-inch guard from Langley, British Columbia, Canada. McKinnon was named the B.C. High School Player of the Year, after completing her senior season for Brookswood Secondary School.
"It's such a feel-good time in recruiting when you are both filling some needs of your program with a talented young player like Sasha, and smiling, because she exudes such enthusiasm and desire to be at Utah," Elliott said. "That is just a great combination."
In addition to her high school success, McKinnon is a member of the Canadian Junior National Team, which will be competing at the Junior World Championships this summer. She has been a member of the junior national team for two years.
In her recently-completed senior season at Brookswood, McKinnon led the Bobcats to a Provincial Championship and a 37-0 record in the regular season. She averaged 13.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. McKinnon shot 54 percent from the field, 37 percent from three-point range and 70 percent from the line last year. She was also selected to the B.C. High School All-Star game, where she earned MVP honors.
McKinnon's squad has won back-to-back Fraser Valley and Provincial Championships. She was the Fraser Valley MVP in 2004 and a first-team all-star at the AAA Provincial Tournament in 2005. McKinnon was second-team all-province in 2004.
McKinnon joins three others in next season's freshman class. Those who signed during November's early signing period are Joh-Teena Filipe, Morgan Warburton and Lydia Whitehead. Filipe was a Class 5A First-Team All-State selection for Skyline High School after averaging 12.6 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Warburton was named the Class 3A State Tournament MVP and the MVP of the 3A All-State team. The Price native led Carbon High School to a state championship, while scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds per contest. Hyrum's Whitehead was a Class 4A Third-Team All-State choice for Mountain Crest High School.
