SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah women's basketball team celebrated its 2004-05 season with a year-end banquet Friday night at the University Park Marriott. In addition to recapping conference and national awards, the Utes handed out their team awards as well.
Junior Kim Smith, the co-Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, was named the team's MVP. Smith shared the MWC honors with teammate Shona Thorburn.
In addition to Smith's award, Lana Sitterud and Camie Allen also won team honors. Sitterud, the team's lone senior, was the big winner. She was named winner of the Fern Gardner Most Inspirational Award, the Leadership Award and the Defensive Specialist Award. Allen earned the Charlene Doi Academic Achievement Award.
In addition to the team awards, the Utes were recognized for their Mountain West Conference Championship and for advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Utah finished the 2004-05 season 26-8, which is tied for the second most wins in Ute women's basketball history.
Smith and Thorburn were honored for their MWC Co-Players of the Year award, as well as their first-team all-MWC accolades. The duo was also recognized for their numerous All-America honors. Sitterud also earned recognition as a third-team All-MWC selection and as the conference's defensive player of the year.
