Members of the University of Utah women's basketball team combined to keep a daily log of their recent trip to Spain and Portugal. The following is a look at that journal, along with some additional comments from assistant coach Carolyn DeHoff, who compiled these journal entries.
May 6 - Marie Warner #33
We departed for Spain in the morning and had to go through Newark with a four-hour layover before we boarded for our seven-hour flight to Madrid, Spain. Being surrounded by all these people that are fluent in Spanish is making us feel a little uneasy about our Spanish speaking skills! Oh well....maybe by the end of the night we'll be able to put together a full sentence!
May 7th - Assistant Coach Carolyn DeHoff
We arrived in Madrid at 9:30 am, and met up with Jason, our travel guide from Basketball Travelers, and our Spain guide, Hernan. By the way, all the bags made it but mine. I took it in stride and figured I could do without my clothes for a day and would just borrow from the players! The goal for the day was to keep us up until the evening, because the last thing you want to do is go to bed during the day and have your clock all messed up. So, Hernan took us on a bus tour of Madrid. This was the first day of many that we walked and walked and walked. Elaine wished we had brought a pedometer and kept it on someone, because we covered a lot of ground by foot. We checked in to our hotel about 3 pm and still had the remainder of the afternoon to keep ourselves awake. Most did, except for two of our players ...

So....It's 1:36 a.m. and the two of us have been sleeping for nine hours already, the problem is it's only 1:37 in the morning ... OOPS!!!! I think we overcompensated on the meaning of siesta (or fiesta as of some of our teammates would say). So what to do for the next six hours? Idea, turn on the TV! But there's only one problem, every station is Spanish, except CNN. But who's going to watch news for six hours? So what to do, what to do? Later that night - 6:00pm Those of us who thought we could handle it went to a bullfight at the Plaza de Toros Las Ventas. According to Hernan, it is the nicest bullfight arena in the world! It was definitely a cultural experience. The event ended at 9:45 p.m. As we were leaving, we realized the sun was still out. In Spain that means dinner time. We went in different groups and ventured to find something good to eat. What a day! From sightseeing, to shopping to bullfighting, it was A LOT of FUN!!!
May 9th - Shona Thorburn #10 / Kim Smith #4
"GAME DAY!" We had a saying this past season and Lana reminded me that today was "Game Day!" The day started at 10:30 a.m. with groups doing various things. The old folks, I guess that means that coaches, including Lana and Sho, took a city tour of the old part of Madrid. The tour included a subway and bus ride to and from the wine store. Saw the apartment of the Spanish actor who won the Oscar for The Pianist. The tour was very beautiful with many old buildings still standing. As for the other groups, they couldn't handle another day of walking, so some took a siesta and the rest hit the mall. (Elaine's addition ... The mall? Come on. In Spain?) After the day's events, we headed out for our game. We stopped three different times to ask for directions to the gym. Our bus driver, Nunno, was amazing. He took that bus through some very small, tight streets. His driving was impressive. We finally arrived to the gym with time to spare and came to find out the team we were scheduled to play hadn't been told by their coach. We were told by the VP of the club that the coach went AWOL the last week. Oh well! We laced it up and scrimmaged against each other. Not bad. We needed to just play. We made the most of it and had a blast.

We got up early ... well early for me ... and got on the bus to Toledo, the old capital of Spain. It was apparently very difficult to invade. They built an escalator for tourists to get into the downtown. It was the only way to get past the great big wall surrounding the city. E was feeling adventurous and managed to walk up ¾ of the stairs. That was all the exercise she needed! When we got there, Heidi said, "Holy Toledo, we're in Toledo!" Oh, that crazy Heidi, always a joker. We toured for about two hours, along with a little shopping at a souvenir shop, the owner of which was happy to see us. Let's just say we all spent some Euros! Back to Madrid we go, game time is just around the corner.
May 11th - Deanne Hanchett #23
Here we are again with one game down and two to go. We played Adecco Estudiantes last night and we went into the game with goals, which set the tone of the game. Coach Kim (Smith) took it upon herself to set our goals and I think the team met them. There were some good times and bad. But overall, we played some pretty darn good American/Canadian basketball! Oh by the way, we had to say goodbye to Hernan after the game, along with his adorable son, Pablo. Hernan expressed his feelings by telling us "This is the most beautiful experience in my very long life." What a sweet thing to say to us. He is a good man and he made Madrid very special. He was right - this was a most beautiful experience!
May 12th - Camie Allen #24
Today we are traveling to Porto. On the way, we stopped in a little city called Slamanca. We walked around for a while and saw the cathedral. Amazing is the only word to describe it. The only bad part about the stop was the downpour. We loaded back on the bus and headed for Porto. We drove over the ocean and arrived at our hotel, which was really nice by the way. We walked around the city and found Pizza Hut. It was a great meal! Porto is more Americanized than Madrid. The only problem now is, we were getting the hang of Spanish and now we have to learn the Portuguese language. Oh well, I do know that "thank you" in Portuguese is Obrigado. We learned that at Pizza Hut.
May 13th - Heidi Carlsen #5
Today we took a tour around Porto. We toured a cathedral. This one was different though, it had a huge tower, the tallest stone tower in Portugal. In fact, it had 250 stairs to get to the top. Don't think we just looked up and stared at it. NOPE! We climbed all 250 steps! Then we made our way to the Port Winery. We learned how port wine was made ... it was great. Back to the hotel, off to lunch by the river and later that night back to the mall for a movie. All in all, it was another great day in Europe!
May 14th - Lana Sitterud #32
This is where the plot thickens. With it being Julie Wood's last week as a young, single lady, the team took it upon themselves to send her off well. We all went down to Lisbon or otherwise known as Lisboa. We went down to the "docks", had an awesome dinner and watched a soccer game between the rival teams in Lisbon going head-to-head on a big screen. After dinner, we wandered down the quaint, little street waiting for the night to get started. We came upon a bar that had music playing, but only two people were dancing. Well, that quickly changed. Heidi and I were the first to venture out and bust a few moves, but later the rest of the group joined. We all tried to keep up with Heidi, but I must say we held our own when the time was right. I have to say, this one will go down in history as the final hoorah for Jewels.
May 15th - (Carolyn's addition)
Obviously, this was the last of day of the trip, with one game remaining. I guess no one was too eager to write about the day. It was pretty short, woke up in the a.m., ate breakfast and took a siesta out by the pool. Some of us, Lana, Kim, Sho and Heidi, played a few pool games. Game time was at 3:30. Boy, was it physical. We played well and ended the trip on a high note, picking up our second win over the Portuguese National Team. That evening, we went to the Hard Rock Lisbon. Yes, we needed an American meal. Then, back to the hotel we went ... to pack and then wake for the LONG trip home.
May 16th - (More Carolyn)
Away we go, 7 ½-hour flight to Newark, two-hour layover, three-hour flight to Houston, 1 and ½-hour layover in Houston (which actually turned out to be 3 hours). Oh well. If that's the worst thing to happen all trip not bad ... and, finally, Home Sweet Home. We arrived in SLC at midnight on May 17th. WELCOME HOME!
