SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah women's basketball player Jessica Perry is currently in Tunisia, taking part in the FIBA Under 19 Women's World Championship. Perry, a native of Guelph, Ontario, is a member of Team Canada.
The Canadian squad opened play at the World Championship with a 69-53 victory over the host team, Tunisia, on Friday. Canada faced Hungary on Saturday, dropping a 71-44 decision to the more experienced Hungarians. The Canadian squad fell to 1-2 Sunday, losing 77-60 to China.
Perry has seen action in all three contests for Canada. She grabbed five rebounds in eight minutes of play against Tunisia and tallied four boards in 16 minutes of action against Hungary. Perry had her best outing so far against China, scoring 11 points and pulling down four rebounds in 24 minutes of floor time.
This is Perry's second year as a member of the Canadian National Team. In the summer of 2005, Perry played seven games with Canda's Junior National Team in the L'International de Basketball de Quebec and an exhibition series in France. She averaged 6.0 points and 5.1 rebounds for Team Canada in those seven games last summer. Perry played in 29 of Utah's 34 games last season, starting 23 contests. She averaged 5.5 points and 3.9 rebounds a game during her freshman season. She will be a sophomore for the Utes this year.
Team Canada is slated to face Australia on Tuesday. Pool play wraps up with a matchup against Spain on Wednesday. Quarterfinal matches begin Friday and the tournament wraps up on Sunday.
This marks the first time Canada has ever qualified to compete in the Women's Under 19 FIBA Championships. Utah nearly had two representatives on the Canadian squad. According to Canada Basketball officials, Ute recruit Sasha McKinnon played very well at the Team Canada tryout camp and most likely would have made the team. However, she was diagnosed with mononucleosis during the camp and could not compete.
Perry's inclusion on Canada's Under 19 team gives Utah three current members of the roster who have competed internationally for their country. Seniors Kim Smith and Shona Thorburn have each competed for Canada's Senior National Team in the past.
