SALT LAKE CITY - Kim Smith, who will play her senior season for the University of Utah women's basketball team this season, has been named to Canada's 2005 Senior Women's National Team.
Smith is one of 15 team members who were selected from tryouts, which took place from July 8-10 in Waterloo, Ontario. Both the senior national and development teams were determined at the camp. Athletes on the senior team will train until July 24. From there, the team will be whittled down to 12 players for a series of exhibition games in Europe and Brazil later this summer. That squad will also compete in September's 2006 FIBA World Championship Qualification tournament in the Dominican Republic from Sept. 14-18.
Smith is in her fourth year as a member of one of Canada's national teams. This will mark her third consecutive year on the senior national team. Smith has played in 36 international games for Team Canada during her career.
At Utah, Smith has been in the starting lineup for all 96 games the Utes have played during her collegiate career. She has scored in double figures in 92 of those games. Smith is a three-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and three-time Honorable Mention All-America honoree. She also earned third-team All-America honors from Full Court Press this past season.
Last season, Smith scored 606 points to break the Utah single-season scoring record. She led the Utes to a 26-8 record, a share of the MWC regular season title and to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
