SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah football team scrimmaged at Rice-Eccles Stadium Tuesday morning, holding its last practice of preseason camp. Classes start Wednesday morning at the U. and the Utes will begin their normal practice schedule Wednesday afternoon.
Despite several probable starters being held out of Tuesday's scrimmage, both the No. 1 offense and No. 1 defense had success against the No. 2 units. Quarterback Brian Johnson led the No. 1 offense on back-to-back scoring drives against the No. 2 defense to open the scrimmage.
Johnson capped both 70-yard scoring drives with touchdown runs. He scored on a 14-yard scramble for the first TD of the scrimmage and later reached the end zone after a 13-yard run on the option. Johnson rushed for 41 yards on five carries. He completed 4-of-5 passes for 88 yards in the portions of the scrimmage during which statistics were compiled.
All three Utah quarterbacks who played had solid outings in Tuesday's workout. Brett Ratliff was 7-for-8 for 125 yards, working mostly with the No. 2 offense. Danny Southwick, who ran the No. 3 offense, was 6-of-6 for 141 yards and a touchdown.
Wide receiver Brian Hernandez had a productive outing. The junior transfer caught four passes for 74 yards and opened the scrimmage with a 23-yard run on a reverse around the left end. Mike Liti carried much of the rushing load for the No. 1 offense, as both Quinton Ganther and Darryl Poston did not see action. Liti rushed for 48 yards on four carries.
Defensively, the No. 1 defense held the No. 2 offense in check for much of the scrimmage. Casey Evans picked up a sack, while Eugene Oates recorded a pass break-up in the secondary. Grady Marshall had a sack, working with the No. 2 defense.
Shaun Harper returned an interception for a touchdown against the No. 2 offense during a two-minute drill.
The No. 3 offense performed well against the No. 3 defense. Southwick ran for a 4-yard score and completed a 10-yard TD pass to junior wide receiver Cody Sorenson. Freshman running back Sean Smith racked up 58 yards on eight carries for the No. 3 unit, including a 36-yard run that was the longest of the the day for any Ute ball carrier.
Utah's practices will now focus on preparation for the season-opener against Arizona, slated for Sept. 2 at Rice-Eccles Stadium. In a change from previously released information, the Utes' practices will be closed to the public for the remainder of the season.
