SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah basketball player Kim Smith (Sr., Mission, British Columbia) is on the roster for the Canadian Senior Women's National Team, which begins play in the FIBA Americas Championship for Women. The Canadian squad is in Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic for the tournament.
The Championship serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2006 FIBA Women's World Championship, to be played in Brazil next September.
Brazil, as the host nation, is guaranteed a place in the 2006 World Championships. The top three teams in the tournament, excluding Brazil, will qualify for the World Championships. Canada opens the tournament today, facing Cuba. The Canadian squad will play five total games in the six-team round-roubin tournament. The event concludes on Sept. 18.
"This is what we have been building toward all summer," Team Canada coach Allison McNeill said. "We are entering this tournament expecting to earn a berth in the FIBA World Championships next year."
Smith has spent her summer with the Canadian Senior Women's National Team, playing exhibition games throughout South America and Canada.
