Smith Leads Canada to Third at FIBA Americas Tournament

HATO MAYOR, Dominican Republic - The Canadian Senior Women's Basketball Team went 3-2 at the FIBA Americas Tournament last week, earning a berth in the 2006 FIBA World Championships. Utah senior women's basketball player Kim Smith was a key member of the Canadian squad's third-place finish.
Smith averaged 13.6 points and 4.4 rebounds over five contests in Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic. She reached double figures in four of the five games during the tournament.
The last time Canada qualified for the FIBA Women's World Championships was 1994, when the Canadians finished seventh. The top three teams in the tournament, along with the host country Brazil, qualified for the Championships. Cuba won the tournament, while Brazil was second. Argentina was fourth, while Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Canada opened the tournament Wednesday with a 73-61 loss at the hands of Cuba. Smith scored just two points, but grabbed a team-high six rebounds in the contest. The Canadians evened their record at 1-1 on Thursday, defeating Argentina 77-57. Smith tallied a game-high 22 points and pulled down five boards in the victory.
Canada fell to 1-2 with a tough, 76-64 loss to Brazil on Friday. Smith scored 15 points and pulled down a team-high seven caroms against the Brazilians. But Canada rebounded to win its final two contests, 83-81 over Puerto Rico and 89-57 over the Dominican Republic. Smith scored 19 points in the last-second victory over Puerto Rico. She tacked on 10 points in limited action in the blowout victory over the Dominican Republic.
The 2006 FIBA Women's World Championships will be held next September in Brazil.
