Utes Look to Bounce Back Against BYU
Coming off a 59-42 loss at the hands of No. 21 New Mexico in Albuquerque Thursday night, The No. 22 Utah women's basketball team will look to regroup against in-state rival BYU Saturday afternoon at the Huntsman Center.
The loss to New Mexico opened Mountain West Conference play for the Utes. Meanwhile, BYU opened league play with a 64-43 drubbing of Air Force in Provo on Thursday night. Utah will look to even its conference record and pick up its 10th victory of the season when the Cougars come calling.
BYU got 21 points from the MWC's leading scorer, Ambrosia Anderson, in the victory over the Falcons. Anderson is averaging 20.7 points per game. She was the only double-figure scorer for BYU in the win over Air Force.
Saturday afternoon's game will be the second consecutive national television broadcast for Utah. Thursday's game at New Mexico was broadcast by College Sports Television (CSTV) and Saturday's tilt will also be shown on that cable network.
Utah enters the game 9-3 overall and 0-1 in the MWC. BYU is 11-1 and 1-0.

? After surpassing 70 points in four of its last five outings, Utah was held to just 42 points in the loss to New Mexico Thursday.

Getting Defensive
Utah has traditionally been one of the top defensive teams in the country. The Utes are on their way to another strong defensive season. In its first 12 contests, Utah has allowed an average of just 55.6 points per game, which ranks No. 3 in the MWC. Utah was ranked No. 26 in scoring defense in the latest NCAA statistical report.
The Utes led the nation in scoring defense in three of the past six seasons (1999-2000, 2000-01, 2002-03). They have ranked in the top 10 in five of the last six years. Last season, Utah ranked second in the Mountain West Conference and 27th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 55.7 points per game.
Opponents are shooting just .370 from the field (No. 3 in the MWC).
Smith's Streak Snapped
Senior forward Kim Smith had her streak of 50 games of scoring in double figures snapped Thursday at New Mexico. Smith has only failed to reach double-figure scoring five times in her Utah career. She has scored at least 10 points in 103 of 108 games with the Utes.
Smith currently ranks No. 3 all-time in scoring at Utah, with 1,844 points. At her current pace, she should finish as the school's all-time leading scorer.
Mo-mentum
One bright spot in the loss to New Mexico was the play of freshman guard Morgan Warburton. The rookie scored a game-high 13 points, including two three-pointers, and committed just one turnover.
Coming into the game, Warburton was averaging 3.0 points per game and had only hit one three-pointer in 18 attempts.
