SALT LAKE CITY -- The 2006-07 version of the University of Utah women's basektball team will play its first exhibition game of the season Saturday afternoon. The Utes will host Albertson College in a 3 p.m. contest at the Huntsman Center.
The Utah women are coming off an historic season, which saw them finish with a 27-7 record, a Mountain West Conference Tournament Championship and an Elite Eight berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Head coach Elaine Elliott is beginning her 24th season as the Utes' mentor. Elliott comes into the season with 490 career victories. When regular-season play commences on Nov. 10, she will begin working her way toward the 500-win milestone.
Utah was picked to finish fourth in the Mountain West Conference in the recent coaches/media poll. The Utes will enter the season in the receiving votes category in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches Poll. If the poll's rankings were extended beyond 25 places, Utah would be ranked 28th.
Albertson College is located in Caldwell, Idaho. The Coyotes are members of the NAIA and play in the Cascade Conference. The Lady Yotes are coached by Reagan Rossi and were picked to finish fifth in their 11-team league.
Utah and Albertson have met twice before, both in the regular season. The Utes took an 80-48 decision in 1998 and won 93-45 in 2001. This meeting marks the eighth time the Lady Yotes have faced an NCAA Division I team in either regular-season or exhibition play. They are 0-7 against D-I squads in their history.
Utah will play another exhibition on Nov. 7, facing Fort Lewis College in a 7 p.m. game at the Huntsman Center. The regular season begins Nov. 10 in Spokane, Wash. against Gonzaga.
