OGDEN, Utah - The University of Utah women's basketball team put together its most complete outing of the season Wednesday night, hammering Weber State College 77-43 at the Dee Events Center. Four Utes reached double figures in the contest and Utah held the Wildcats to just 43 points on 26.4 percent shooting.
Utah's Joh-Teena Filipe (Soph., Salt Lake City) recorded the first double-double of her career, tallying career-high marks of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica Perry (Jr., Guelph, Ont.) scored a game-high 17 points off the bench for the Utes, just one game after not playing against Oregon on Saturday.
Kalee Whipple (Fr., Hiko, Nev.) scored a career-high 16 for Utah. Morgan Warburton (Soph., Helper, Utah) added 13 points, despite playing a season-low 16 minutes after getting into early foul trouble.
Utah (2-4) opened the game with a three-pointer from Whipple. From there, it just kept getting better for the Utes, who never trailed in the contest. Weber State (4-2) hung with Utah in the early going, thanks to a pair of three-pointers from Sara Tuomi and one from Chelsey Warburton.
Utah held a six-point lead, 27-21, with 6:33 remaining in the first half. But the Utes busted the game open with a 12-2 run over the rest of the first half. Utah shot 56.7 percent in the first half and took a 39-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. Whipple scored nine of her 16 points in the first half, while Warburton tallied nine of her 13 points in the opening 20 minutes.
Heidi Carlsen (Sr., St. George, Utah) buried a three-pointer less than two minutes into the second half. Her trey pushed Utah's lead to 20 points, 44-24. The Utes continued to pour it on. Perry hit the second of her two three-pointers 10 minutes later to push Utah's lead to 30 points, 60-30. The Ute advantage improved to as many 39 points late in the contest.
Janie Rayback paced Weber State with 15 points off the bench. Sara Tuomi, who averaged 21.4 points per contest coming into the game, was held to just 10 by a stifling Utah defense. Tuomi also paced the Wildcats on the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Utah's 77 points was its highest offensive ouput of the season, while Weber State's 43 was by far its lowest. The Wildcats' previous low was 69 in a win over Northern Iowa.
Utah is back in action again Friday night, hosting Long Beach State at the Huntsman Center. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
