Utes Open Season at Gonzaga
The 2006-07 women's basketball season officially gets under way for the University of Utah in Spokane, Wash. Friday. The Utes will travel for their season-opener and face the Gonzaga University Bulldogs at the McCarthey Athletic Center in an 8 p.m. (PST) tipoff.
The Utes are coming off a pair of exhibition victories, defeating Albertson College 98-45 on Saturday and stopping Fort Lewis College 81-38 Tuesday night.
Three Utes scored in double figures in each of the exhibition contests. Marie Warner tallied 16 and 12, respectively. Heidi Carlsen recorded 12 points Saturday and 11 on Tuesday. Morgan Warburton scored 13 against Albertson and 17 against Fort Lewis.
Gonzaga defeated Eastern Oregon 74-48 in its only exhibition game of the preseason.
Utah Fast Breaks
? Twelve of Utah's 13 uniformed players scored in both of Utah's exhibition games.
? Three Utes -- Marie Warner, Morgan Warburton and Heidi Carlsen -- scored in double figures in both exhibition games.
? Utah shot 50 percent from the field in its two exhibition matchups.
? The Utes average rebounding margin in their two exhibition games was +24.0.
? Utah averaged 25.0 turnovers per game in the exhibition season, compared with giving the ball away just 13.7 times per contest during the 2005-06 season.
? This is the Utes' first road season-opener since 2002, when they lost 54-51 at TCU.
For Openers
Utah is 6-4 in season-openers over the previous 10 seasons. That includes a 2-3 mark in season-openers played away from Salt Lake City. Under Elaine Elliott, the Utes are 15-8 in season openers and 8-5 when the first game of the season is played outside the Huntsman Center. Overall, Utah is 22-10 in games to lift the lid on the season, including a 10-7 road mark.
Half and Half
Utah shot the ball well in its two exhibition contests. The Utes shot just under 50 percent from the field in their first contest, going 33-of-67 (.493). In the second game, Utah converted just more than half of its field-goal attempts, hitting at a .509 clip (29-of-57). For the exhibition season, Utah made exactly 50 percent of its attempts, going 62-of-124.
Mo-mentum
Sophomore guard Morgan Warburton led Utah in scoring through its two exhibition games. While these two games don't count toward any official statistics or results, Warburton has showed the ability to score consistently, at least in the exhibition season. That's important for Utah, considering it lost more than 60 percent of its scoring from last season. Warburton scored in double figures eight times during her freshman season.
Wow, Warner
Junior forward Marie Warner has reached double-figure scoring just twice in regular-season play. Coming into this season, she had never scored 10 points or more in consecutive games during her Utah career, including exhibition games. But Warner changed all that in her two exhibition outings to open this season. She tallied a game-high 17 points against Albertson College Saturday, then put 11 on the board against Fort Lewis Tuesday.
