SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah head women's basketball coach Elaine Elliott has announced the signing of Cydney Knight (Pasco, Wash.) to a national letter-of-intent. Knight is currently a senior at Pasco High School and will join the Utes next season.
"You can't measure the intensity and desire that Cydney brings to the court," Elliott said. "Those characteristics set Cydney apart."
Knight is a 6-foot 1-inch forward. She lived in Richland, Wash. and played for Richland High School last year as a junior. She was voted a "Super Six" player in the Big 9 Conference and ranked fifth in the league in scoring. Knight was also a standout cross country athlete at Richland, earning all-league and all-area recognition.
"Out of all the colleges I was looking at, I knew that Utah had everything I had ever wanted in a school, both in a basketball sense and in an academic sense," Knight said.
Knight attended Connell (Wash.) High School during her freshman and sophomore years. As a freshman at Connell, she earned the team's rookie of the year award and helped the team to a league championship, a second-place finish in the district tournament and a berth in the state tournament. During her sophomore year at Connell, Knight was named the team's most improved player and was a second-team all-league selection. Connell was a second-team all-state selection as a sophomore, while helping her team to an eighth-place finish in the state.
During her freshman and sophomore years at Connell High School, Knight also earned a great deal of recognition in track and field and cross country. She won a state championship in the two-mile run as a freshman, while taking third in the mile run. Knight holds the Connell High School records for the mile and two-mile runs. As a sophomore, Knight repeated as the two-mile run state champion and took second in the mile run. She was a first-team all-league in both track and cross country, while earning all-state honors in track and field.
Knight has also played AAU basketball for the Northwest Sagebrush.
"Cydney is a very long and athletic player with great versatility," said Sagebrush coach Mike Hodgins. "She has a nice skill set, which enables her to play multiple positions effectively. Cydney is a joy to coach, as she has a great work ethic, a strong passion for the game and is an excellent teammate."
In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Knight is a model student and citizen. She has been on the honor roll and the superintendent's roll and was inducted into the National Honor Society. She has earned numerous school awards for academic excellence. Knight has also been heavily involved in community service organizations in her hometowns.
