PALO ALTO, Calif. - Joh-Teena Filipe's 12 points led the University of Utah women's basketball team (5-5 overall) but it wasn't enough as the No. 14/15-ranked Stanford Cardinal bagged a 74-47 win here at Maples Pavilion today.
The Utes went toe-to-toe with the Cardinal for the first ten minutes of the game but couldn't keep up with the home team as it shot an impressive 50 percent (27-for-54) from the floor. Utah only shot 35 percent (17-for-48).
Utah held the lead three different times in the first 10 minutes, the last coming at 14:40 when it owned a 9-8 lead on a Filipe jumper. However, an 11-1 run gave Stanford the lead for good as it held a 19-10 cushion at that point.
The nine-point Stanford lead swelled to as much as 16 in the first half, 35-19, before it settled at 14, 39-24, at the end of the first frame.
Stanford continued to shoot well in the second half as it managed to extend its lead to as much as 33 points. Utah trimmed it down to the 27 as the Utes scored the last five points of the game.
Utah did hold the 36-28 edge in rebounds as Lydia Whitehead finished with a game-high seven boards and Filipe with six. Freshmen Brette Ulsaker and Kalee Whipple both had four apiece.
Morgan Warburton finished with 11 points on 5-of-12 shooting. Heidi Carlsen and Whipple both added seven points.
The Cardinal had four players tally double-digit points, including three of their starters. Leading them was Jayne Appel with 15 points off the bench.
