Free Throws Boost Utah Women Over Arizona, 66-60

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's basketball team was 25-of-31 from the free-throw line in Saturday afternoon's contest against Arizona. The Utes needed nearly every one of those freebies, pulling out a 66-60 victory over the Wildcats at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Arizona (5-5) committed 28 personal fouls, compared to just 14 for Utah (5-4). Three Wildcats were disqualified with five fouls. The Utes took advantage of Arizona's physical play, getting 20 more attempts from the charity stripe than the Wildcats. Arizona was 8-of-11 at the line.
Morgan Warburton (Soph., Helper, Utah) scored 19 points to lead the Utes. She was 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. Jessica Perry (Jr., Guelph, Ont.) added 11 points for Utah, scoring 10 of them in the first half. Joh-Teena Filipe (Soph., Salt Lake City) did a little bit of everything for the Utes. Filipe scored seven points, grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, tallied four assists, recorded two steals and blocked a shot. Jessica Arnold led Arizona with 20 points.
Utah led by on, 38-37, on a pair of Brette Ulsaker (Fr., McPherson, Kan.) free throws at the 15:17 mark of the of the second half. But Arizona's Jessica Arnold went on a one-person scoring streak. Arnold sandwiched a pair of short jumpers around a three-pointer and single-handedly gave the Wildcats a five-point lead, 43-38, with 13:47 left in the contest.
The Utes chipped away, pulling within one point three times over the next five minutes. Finally, Warburton grabbed a steal, drew a foul and buried a pair of free throws to give Utah a 51-50 advantage with just less than eight minutes remaining. Arnold and Warburton traded three-pointers to make it 54-53. Amina Njonkou scored on a layup with six minutes left to give Arizona a 55-54 advantage. It was the 12th lead change of the second half and the last lead for the Wildcats.
Utah outscored Arizona 12-5 from there, with 10 of those points coming at the free-throw line. Utah's only field goal in the final 6:11 of the contest iced the victory. Utah led 62-60 when Arizona's Joy Hollingsworth missed a triple with 41 seconds remaining. The Utes called time out with 20 seconds left. After the time out, Utah inbounded to Warburton, who blew by her defender, drove to the left baseline and scored the layup to give her team a four-point lead with 16 seconds remaining.
Kalee Whipple hit a pair of free throws with five seconds left after an Arizona miss to account for the final six-point margin.
Utah built a lead of as many as nine points in the first half behind Perry and Marie Warner (Jr., Hamilton, Ont.). Trailing by two early in the first half, the Utes went on a 14-3 run. Warner scored five points in the spurt, capping it with a traditional three-point play. Perry scored six during the run, which left Utah with a 26-17 lead at the 7:18 mark of the first period.
Arizona put together a run of its own to close out the half. The Wildcats outscored the Utes 16-6 to take a one-point edge into the intermission, 33-32.
Utah is back in action again next Saturday (Dec. 16), traveling to face nationally-ranked Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif.
