Utah Hosts Lobos Saturday at Huntsman Center
The University of Utah women's basketball team has a chance to accomplish quite a bit Saturday afternoon at the Huntsman Center, when No. 16 New Mexico visits.
The Utes have a chance to avenge a 59-42 loss back on Jan. 5 in Albuquerque, N.M. Utah would break a six-game losing streak to the Lobos with a victory. A Ute win could also pull them into a tie for second place in the Mountain West Conference.
New Mexico is coming off a 60-55 loss at BYU Thursday night. The Lobos got 25 points and 10 rebounds from Dionne Marsh, but no other New Mexico player scored more than seven points. The Lobos shot just 36.2 percent from the field and committed 17 turnovers in the loss.
Marsh is New Mexico's leading scorer for the season. She averages 16.3 points per game. Katie Montgomery and Abbie Letz also average in double digits, scoring 11.1 and 10.2 points per game, respectively. Letz is the Lobos' leading rebounder, grabbing 7.8 caroms per contest.
Utah has not defeated New Mexico since taking a 52-43 home win Jan. 25, 2004.
Utah Fast Breaks
? Utah holds a 39-17 advantage in the series with New Mexico.
? New Mexico has won the last six meetings with Utah.
? The Utes have only lost to New Mexico once in Salt Lake City. That loss was a 70-63 decision on Feb. 13 last season. Utah is 26-1 when facing the Lobos at the Huntsman Center.
? Utah's last victory in the series was a 52-43 win on Jan. 25, 2004 in Salt Lake.
? Utah, which is No. 9 in the nation in three-pointers per game, made just two Thursday night against Wyoming.
Holy Helpers
The Utes totaled more than 20 assists for the fifth time this season when they dished out 23 helpers against Air Force last week.
Utah averages 16.4 assists per game, tops in the Mountain West Conference and No. 34 in the nation as of the last report. Good ball movement has been a key to the Utah offense this season. The Utes have recorded helpers on 311 of their 448 made field goals. That means a Ute has been the beneficiary of a good pass from one of her teammates on more than two-thirds (69.4%) of all the team's field goals.
Utah also led the MWC in assists last season, averaging 16.15 per contest.
Smith Reaching 2,000-Point Plateau
Kim Smith could become just the sixth Utah basketball player (male or female) to reach 2,000 points Saturday. The Utah senior is just nine points shy of the milestone, with 1,991 points entering the contest with New Mexico.
Smith would become just the third Utah women's player -- along with Julie Krommenhoek and Deb Asper -- to join the 2,000-point club. Only Keith Van Horn, Billy McGill and Josh Grant have scored 2,000 or more for the Utah men.
The Big Sho
Senior guard Shona Thorburn has not been scoring with the same consistency this season as she did in 2004-05. But the senior point guard is still the straw that stirs the drink for Utah.
Thorburn is dishing out 6.36 assists per contest, which is the best in the MWC and ranks 11th nationally. She doled out 10 helpers Thursday against Wyoming, which was the fourth time this season and the ninth time in her career she has reached double-digit assists.
Thorburn is averaging 6.3 rebounds, which ranks second on the team and 12th in the MWC. She also leads the team and is No. 6 in the MWC with 2.06 steals per game.
