Utah Travels to Face BYU Wednesday
For the second consecutive game, the University of Utah women's basketball team has a chance to avenge a painful loss from earlier this season.
The Utes exacted a measure of revenge against New Mexico Saturday. On Wednesday, they travel to Provo to face BYU, which edged Utah 61-60 on a buzzer-beater at the Huntsman Center on Jan. 7.
BYU enters the game as the top team in the Mountain West Conference. The Cougars are 19-1 overall and 9-0 in MWC play. BYU's only loss came on Dec. 21 to North Carolina State, a team Utah defeated four days earlier.
The Cougars are led by Ambrosia Anderson, who ranks No. 2 in the MWC in scoring, averaging 18.5 points per game. She is also BYU's top rebounder, pulling down 7.6 boards per contest. Mallary Gillespie is the only other Cougar to average double-figure scoring, tallying 10.4 points per contest.
Prior to the loss earlier this season, Utah had won five straight against BYU. The Utes have won the last three meetings in Provo.
Utah Fast Breaks
? Utah holds a 53-31 advantage in the series with BYU.
? The Utes have won eight of the last 10 meetings with the Cougars.
? Utah has won the last three meetings with BYU in Provo. The Utes came from behind and won 68-58 at the Marriott Center last season.
? Utah's last loss in Provo during the series came on Dec. 23, 2002. BYU won that game by a tally of 62-53.
? Utah entered last week averaging more than seven three-pointers per game. The Utes hit just seven total in two games, but still won both outings.
A Little Help Here?
Utah averages 16.25 assists per game, tops in the Mountain West Conference and No. 33 in the nation as of Monday's report. Good ball movement has been a key to the Utah offense this season. The Utes have recorded helpers on 325 of their 474 made field goals. That means a Ute has been the beneficiary of a good pass from one of her teammates on more than two-thirds (68.6%) of all the team's field goals.
The Utes have totaled more than 20 assists five times this season. Most recently, they dished out 23 helpers against Air Force on Jan. 18.
Utah also led the MWC in assists last season, averaging 16.15 per contest.
Smith Starts Another Streak
Senior forward Kim Smith had her streak of 50 games of scoring in double figures snapped at New Mexico on Jan. 5. But she has been back in the double-figure scoring column in her last seven outings. She has now reached double digits in 111 of 116 career games.
Smith's 26-point effort against Wyoming last Thursday marked the 10th time this season she has scored more than 20 points. For her career, Smith has reached 20 points or more 33 times. She tallied her fifth double-double of the season Saturday vs. New Mexico, tallying 14 points and 16 boards.
The Big Sho
Senior guard Shona Thorburn has not been scoring with the same consistency this season as she did in 2004-05. But she came through with a career-high 28 points vs. New Mexico Saturday.
Thorburn is dishing out 6.25 assists per contest, which is the best in the MWC and ranks 11th nationally. She doled out 10 helpers last Thursday against Wyoming, which was the fourth time this season and the ninth time in her career she has reached double-digit assists.
Thorburn is averaging 6.2 rebounds, which ranks second on the team and 12th in the MWC. She also leads the team and is No. 6 in the MWC with 2.0 steals per game.
Smith Tops 2,000-Point Plateau
Kim Smith became just the sixth Utah basketball player (male or female) to reach 2,000 points Saturday. The Utah senior scored 14 points against New Mexico. Her step-back jumper with 4:35 left in the game pushed her over the 2,000-point mark. She currently has 2,005 career points.
Smith is just the third Utah women's player -- along with Julie Krommenhoek and Deb Asper -- to join the 2,000-point club. The following is a look at the all-time Utah 2,000-point club: 1. Keith Van Horn (2,542; 1993-97); 2. Billy McGill (2,321; 1959-62); 3. Julie Krommenhoek (2,087; 1994-98); 4. Deb Asper (2,075; 1980-84); 5. Kim Smith (2,005; 2002-present); 6. Josh Grant (2,000; 1988-93).
