Utes, Lady Rebels Tangle For Championship Game Berth
The University of Utah women's basketball team will face UNLV in the semifinals of the X-Box Live Mountain West Conference Tournament Friday.
The second-seeded Utes advanced to the semifinals with a 67-47 win over seventh-seeded Air Force Wednesday afternoon. Kim Smith tied a season high with 29 points and recorded her seventh double-double of the season, grabbing 13 rebounds, in the win.
Meanwhile, the Lady Rebels, who were the No. 6 seed, upset third-seeded New Mexico 57-45 on Wednesday. Sherry McCracklin was a force inside for UNLV against the Lobos. She had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
UNLV is paced in scoring by Sheena Moore, who averages 13.3 points per game. McCracklin is the only other double-figure scorer at 12.3 points per game. She is also the team's top rebounder, grabbing 6.8 caroms per contest.
Utah has defeated UNLV twice this season. The Utes never trailed in Las Vegas on Jan. 21, but never pulled away either, in a 59-51 victory. Utah's 75-64 victory at home on Feb. 22 was a five-point game with two minutes to go.
