Former Ute Smith Joins Canadian National Team

SALT LAKE CITY -- Former University of Utah women's basketball star Kim Smith has now joined her Canadian national teammates in Sao Paolo, Brazil for the 2006 FIBA Women's World Championships September 12-23. Smith was delayed joining her Canuck teammates due to her WNBA team, the Sacramento Monarchs, participating the in WNBA finals last week.
The Monarchs fell to the Detroit Shock 3-2 in the best-of-five championship series.
Smith, a six-year veteran of the Canadian national team, was drafted by the Monarchs, 13th overall in the 2006 WNBA draft. During the season, she averaged 10.1 minutes and 2.4 points per game. At Utah, Smith was a four-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Year. She was a third-team All-American as a senior, while helping to guide the Utes to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament.
Smith began her career with the Canadian national team in 2001 playing in the junior women and the young women's national programs, until becoming a mainstay with the Senior Women's National Team in 2003. Last year at the FIBA Americas Qualifier in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Smith averaged 13.6 points and 4.3 rebounds, helping her team to a bronze medal. That performance gave the Canadians their current berth into the FIBA Women's World Championships, the first appearance for Canada since 1994.
The FIBA World Championships for Women will take place in São Paolo, Brazil, September 12-23. Canada has been placed in group "B" and will play round-robin games against Senegal (Sept 12) Lithuania (Sept 13) and Australia (Sept 14). The top three teams will advance on to the next round.
