Smith, Team Canada Fall to Lithuania

SAO PAOLO, Brazil -- Canada dropped to 1-1 at the 2006 FIBA World Basketball Championships for Women Wednesday, after falling 84-58 to Lithuania in front a loud and festive Brazilian crowd.
Canada opened the scoring when Nikki Johnson hit a pull-up jumper less than a minute into the game. Lithuania led 6-4 two minutes into the game and then slowly started to add to their lead throughout the quarter, going on a 9-0 run. Lithuania eventually held a 24-10 lead after one period of play. Canada struggled from beyond the arc, missing all five attempts, while Lithuania connected on three-for-six. Lithuania also got to the free-throw line eight times (sinking five) compared to Canada's three trips (sinking two).
Canada's Teresa Kleindienst opened the second quarter scoring with a driving basket, but hot outside shooting and transition baskets by Lithuania continued to build the lead in the second quarter. The Lithuanians outscored Canada 22-12 in the period for a 46-22 halftime lead. Lithuania finished the half shooting 15-32 from the floor including five-of-11 from three-point range compared to Canada's seven-of-24 shooting mark including one-of-seven from behind the arc.
Canada rebounded in the third quarter, outscoring Lithuania 20-17 in the stanza on the strength of a 6-0 run that cut the Canadian deficit to 19 points. Tammy Sutton-Brown scored all six points during Canada's run.
Canada entered the fourth quarter trailing 63-42, and played their second unit for most of the period. Lithuania took advantage, outscoring Canada 21-16 in the stanza en route to the victory.
Canada finished the game shooting 20-56 from the field and three-of-14 (.214) from three-point range compared to Lithuania's 28-61 shooting, including eight-of-20 (.400) from behind the arc. Canada also had 20 turnovers to Lithuania's 11 in the loss.
Brown paced the Canadian attack with 11 points while Montreal's Amanda Brown was Canada's other double-digit scorer with 10 points. Every Canadian player scored at least two points in the game. Kleindienst led Canada with five rebounds from the guard position. Former University of Utah star Kim Smith tallied just two points, after scoring 12 in Tuesday's game against Senegal.
Canada (ranked 15) plays its next game against the third-ranked Australians who are 1-0 in the tournament.
