Elliott Picks Up Career Win No. 500

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - University of Utah head women's basketball coach Elaine Elliott picked up career victory No. 500 Thursday night.
Elliott's Ute squad took a 73-57 victory over Colorado State at Moby Arena to make her the 32nd NCAA Division I women's coach ever to reach the 500-win milestone. Elliott is now one of only 25 active coaches in Division I with 500 or more.
Morgan Warburton (Soph., Helper, Utah) led the Utah charge, pouring in 20 points. Warburton made eight of her 10 field-goal attempts, including 2-of-2 from three-point range. She also dished out seven assists, pulled down five rebounds and grabbed three steals.
The Utes (10-6, 3-0 MWC) also got plenty of contribution off the bench from Kalee Whipple (Fr., Hiko, Nev.) and Marie Warner (Jr., Hamilton, Ont.). Whipple scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Warner tallied 14 points and snared six caroms. Those two combined for 32 of Utah's 33 points off the bench. CSU's reserves scored just 13.
Colorado State (6-9, 1-2 MWC) didn't make it easy on Elliott and her team in the early going. The Rams jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes of the contest. But a 10-2 Utah spurt midway through the first half gave Utah its first lead, 19-14 with 9:43 remaining in the half.
Utah maintained the advantage the rest of the way, taking a 29-23 advantage into the locker room at halftime. The Utes still led by six, 41-35, six minutes into the second half. From there, it was nearly all Utah. Whipple capped a 7-1 outburst with a three-pointer to give her team its first double-digit lead, 48-36, with 13 minutes remaining.
Four straight CSU points trimmed Utah's edge to eight, 48-40. That was the last time Colorado State got within striking distance. The Utes outscored the Rams 15-5 over the next four minutes to open up an 18-point advantage. A steal and sprawling downcourt pass from Brette Ulsaker (Fr., McPherson, Kan.) set up Jessica Perry (Jr., Guelph, Ont.) for a traditional three-point play to spark Utah's game-deciding outburst.
Four Utes scored in double figures. Perry tacked on 11 to go with the efforts of Warburton, Whipple and Warner. Sara Hunter scored 16 to lead Colorado State. The Rams also got 10 points off the bench from Raysha Ritter. Utah converted its field-goal attempts at a rate of 49.1 percent, including 60 percent (15-of-25) in the second half.
The Utes are back in action again Saturday afternoon, when they visit Cox Pavilion for a 3 p.m. matchup with UNLV in Las Vegas.
