Filipe Named Mountain West Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Utah sophomore forward Joh-Teena Filipe has been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, earning her first career honor.
The Salt Lake City, Utah, native scored 10 of the Utes' 49 points on 5-for-10 shooting, while handing then No. 25 New Mexico its first conference home loss, 49-48, since Jan. 6, 2002. Filipe also contributed five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal in the victory Sunday.
In a 51-48 win over San Diego State Thursday, Filipe netted nine second-half points, including seven straight free throws, to lift Utah out of a 27-16 halftime deficit. She finished the game with 14 points and 10 rebounds, earning her third double-double of the season.
On the week, Filipe was 9-for-19 (.474) from the field and 7-for-9 (.778) from the charity stripe. She accumulated 25 points and averaged 7.5 rebounds and two blocks per game.
Filipe's award is the second of its kind for Utah this season. Kalee Whipple (Fr., Hiko, Nev.) was honored as MWC Co-Player of the Week back on Dec. 11.
