Elliott Goes For Win No. 500 Thursday
The University of Utah women's basketball team travels to Fort Collins, Colo. Thursday for a Mountain West Conference matchup with Colorado State. Ute head coach Elaine Elliott could reach the 500-win milestone with a Utah victory.
The Utes are coming off a 49-48 upset over then-No. 25 New Mexico at The Pit on Sunday. This is the fifth time in the eight-year history of the Mountain West Conference that Utah has opened league play with two consecutive wins.
Colorado State comes into Thursday's contest on the heels of an 86-36 loss at TCU. The Rams converted just 20 percent of their field-goal attempts and turned the ball over 30 times in the loss to the Lady Frogs.
CSU is 6-8 on the season and 1-1 in MWC action.
Utah Fast Breaks
? Elaine Elliott needs just one more victory to reach 500 for her career.
? Utah is 6-0 this season when scoring 66 points or more. The Utes are 4-0 when holding opponents below 50 points.
? The Utes are averaging 13.2 offensive boards per game, compared to 9.9 for the opposition.
? The 14-point deficit overcome Sunday at New Mexico was the largest the Utes have overcome for a victory this season.
? Utah's win at New Mexico was their first road win over the Lobos in exactly six years.
? The Utes have allowed just 48 points in each of their first two MWC games this season.
Kickin' Glass
Utah has been dominant on the boards throughout most of the 2006-07 season. The Utes have won or tied in the rebounding battle in 14 of 15 games. Utah has out-rebounded the opposition by seven or more in 13 of its 15 contests. Utah's average rebound margin of +8.7 is easily the best in the Mountain West Conference. Utah's 10-rebound edge against New Mexico Sunday marked the seventh time Utah has held a double-digit advantage on the boards. The Utes are also tops in the MWC in rebounding defense, giving up just 30.3 caroms a contest.
Filipe Named MWC POW
Sophomore forward Joh-Teena Filipe (Salt Lake City) tallied her third double-double of the season last Thursday vs. San Diego State. She scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win over the Aztecs. Filipe came back to tally 10 points in Sunday's win over New Mexico at The Pit. She also tallied a nice all-around game against the Lobos, ripping down five boards, dishing out two assists, rejecting two shots and grabbing one steal. For the week, she averaged 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. All those numbers helped Filipe to her first career Mountain West Conference Player of the Week award.
