Women's Basketball Races Past Utah State

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's basketball team (7-3 overall) used the 21-point effort of Morgan Warburton to down in-state rival Utah State here in the Huntsman Center tonight, 70-38.
Today's victory marked the sixth time Utah has won in its last seven outings. The loss drops USU to 2-6 on the year. Today also marked the first time that Utah and Utah State met on the women's hardwood in 20 years.
Warburton and Leilani Mitchell combined to score Utah's first 11 points of the game. Warburton had five and Mitchell tallied six in helping the Utes to race out to an early 11-4 lead on Utah State.
Utah shot 52 percent (13-for-25) in the first half as it held the 31-17 lead at the break. It settled on a 50.9 shooting average (29-for-57) for the game. Warburton ended it with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting. She was 2-for-4 from three-point range. Mitchell and Kalee Whipple each had 12 points while Katie King finished with 10.
Mitchell did a little bit of every for the Utes tonight. In addition to her 12 points, she had seven boards, seven assists and three steals.
The Utes limited the Aggies to just 28.6 percent (14-for-49) shooting, and they held the commanding 40-26 edge under the glass. Jessica Perry was the game's top rebounder with nine boards. Perry also had four points, three steals and an assist in addition to her boards.
The Utes were able to build an early 7-0 lead despite shooting just 33 percent from the field. However, they stretched its cushion to as much as 10 points in the first stanza when they owned the 16-6 lead at the 11:14 mark. Utah State chiseled away at the lead as it engineered an 11-4 run to cut the deficit to three, 20-17 with 4:52 remaining. That was as close as the Aggies would ever get for the rest of the game. The Utes scored the last 11 points of the half, and they took the 31-17 lead into the break.
Utah's defense stifled the Aggies who only made two field goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. USU finished shooting just 22 percent (6-for-27) in the second frame as it watched Utah's lead stretch to as many as 30 points, 66-36 with just over two minutes left. The Utes finished the game with a pair of buckets from Warburton and Hennasea Tokumura as Utah cruised to the 32-point win.
Up next for the Utes are the Gaels of Saint Mary's College. They come to Salt Lake City on Wednesday, Dec. 19, for a 7 p.m. tip.
