SALT LAKE CITY - Morgan Warburton tallied her second straight 20-point game, and was one of three University of Utah women's basketball players in double-digit scoring figures as the Utes (8-3 overall) raced past Saint Mary's College here this evening, 85-59.
With the loss, the Gaels slip to 6-7 on the year.
Utah shot a cool 47.2 percent (34-for-72) for the game. It was Warburton who lead all scorers with her second 20-point outing in as many games. She finished with an even 20 tallies on 9-of-15 shooting. She also cleared six boards and handed out three assists.
Whipple had her usual double-double with 18 points and a game-high 11 boards in helping the Utes to victory.
Standout point guard Leilani Mitchell was a stat-sheet stuffer as well. She had 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting. But, she also had a game-high eight assists to only two turnovers in 33 minutes of play.
The Utes hauled in an eye-popping 51 rebounds, led by Whipple's effort under the boards. But, Utah's post players also did their job under the glass. Katie King had eight boards while Jessica Perry and Deanne Stevenson both pulled in six rebounds apiece.
That trio combined to shoot 9-for-18 from the post in scoring 23 points. Perry's nine points led the way on 4-for-5 shooting.
Utah held the Gaels to just 35.6 percent (21-for-59) shooting. Lauren Shaughnessy led SMC with 16 points while Shaughnessy and Sierra Chambers both had a team-high five boards.
The Utes came out of the gates on fire, shooting 60 percent in the game's first 10 minutes. It enabled the home team to build a 15-point lead on the Gaels, as the Utes held the 28-13 cushion with 10:34 remaining. A 7-2 run pushed Utah's lead up to 22 points, 35-13, which turned out to be their largest lead of the half. Utah finished shooting 51.4 percent for the half as it held the 46-30 lead at the break.
SMC out-scored the Utes, 8-4, in the first three-and-a-half minutes of the second half. That trimmed the 16-point halftime lead to 12, 50-38. But, that's as close as the Gaels would get. Utah would then go on a 15-2 run to claim its biggest lead of the game, 69-42, with 10 minutes left. The Utes' lead never dipped under 20 points the rest of the way as they cruised to the 26-point win.
