LOS ANGELES - The University of Utah women's basketball team (5-3 overall) fought hard in the second half, but it couldn't overcome its slow start and a 17-point halftime deficit as the USC Trojans tallied the 62-45 win here in the Galen Center tonight.
The loss snaps Utah's four-game winning streak, and the win ups USC's record to 4-2.
The Utes, who shot a meager 30.6 percent (15-for-49) for game, were led by Morgan Warburton's game-high 16 points. Twelve of those points came at the start of the second half where her four three-pointers helped Utah to get within seven of USC, 35-28. Warburton shot 6-for-15 from the field, and was 4-for-9 from three-point range. She also led the Utes with a game-high-tying eight boards.
Kalee Whipple was the only other Ute in double-figure scoring numbers with 12 points.
USC managed to shoot just 38.6 percent (25-for-57) from the floor. Morghan Medlock led the home team with 13 points. The Trojans dominated the glass, 42-30 as Medlock led them with eight rebounds.
Poor shooting and rebounding put the Utes in a hole in the game's first seven minutes. Utah shot 1-for-9 during that span and USC held the 13-3 edge on the glass. All that added up to a 7-2 lead for the Women of Troy. A Whipple steal and fast-break lay up cut USC's lead to three, 7-4, with 12:04 left. A 7-3 exchange allowed USC to take a seven-point lead, 14-7. Utah had trimmed it back down to three, 15-12, but USC ended the half with a 17-3 run that let it take the 32-15 lead into the break.
Utah couldn't shake its shooting woes in the first half. It only made six field goals, shot 25 percent (6-for-24) and had 10 turnovers, eight of which were unforced. The Trojans also held a 2-to-1 advantage on the glass in the first half, 22-11.
The visitors came out of the locker room with a new conviction in the second stanza. Utah began the half with a 12-3 run, cutting the 17-point halftime deficit down to seven with 13:20 left. Warburton hit all the shots during that run, all of them three-pointers. Utah had the deficit down to six, 37-31, but USC went on a 12-0 run to take the 49-31 lead with 8:30 remaining. Utah would never get back within single digits as the Trojans stretched their lead to 22, 58-36, with 4:37 left. USC managed to hold on for the 17-point win.
The Utes complete their three-game road-swing this weekend when they play at Minnesota on Saturday, Dec. 8. Tipoff in Williams Arena is set for noon (CT). Utah returns home on Dec. 15 to host in-state rival Utah State.
