HAMILTON, Ontario, Canada -- Former University of Utah guard Shona Thorburn was honored Thursday night as the winner of the Catholic Youth Organization Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year for 2006. The award recognizes the top athlete from the Hamilton, Ont. area.
Thorburn, who is currently preparing for her second season with the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx, was one of 30 nominees for the award. More than 1,000 people were in attendance at the Hamilton Convention Centre for the award presentation.
Thorburn was unable to attend, after just returning to Minneapolis, Minn. after doing publicity work for the Lynx and the WNBA during the NBA All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas. However, she told the Hamilton Spectator, a co-sponsor of the award, that it was a great honor since it had been so long since she had actually competed in Hamilton.
"It seems like forever, so to be remembered this way is nice," Thorburn said.
Thorburn finished her Utah career as the all-time leader in assists, both for Utah and the Mountain West Conference. She was the seventh overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft.
