SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Utah women's basketball team dropped its second straight game Saturday afternoon, falling to the San Diego State Aztecs 71-66 at Cox Arena. The Utes struggled offensively, turning the ball over 22 times and shooting just 37.5 percent from the field.
Meanwhile, San Diego State (10-10, 3-6 MWC) shot 52 percent in the second half and 49 percent for the game. The Aztecs outscored Utah 23-8 in points off turnovers, despite giving the ball away 18 times themselves.
Utah (14-8, 7-2 MWC) scored the first five points of the game. But the Utes went scoreless for the next 5:31, allowing San Diego State to score 12 unanswered points. Utah never led again. The Utes managed to tie the game a couple times late in the first half, but the Aztecs grabbed a two-point edge, 28-26 at the intermission.
For the first 10 minutes of the second half, San Diego State just held Utah at arm's length, maintaining a five- to seven-point advantage. Midway through the second half, Utah used a 5-0 spurt, including a Marie Warner (Jr., Hamilton, Ont.) three-point play, to pull within four, 46-42. But that's as close as the Utes would get.
Over the next four minutes, San Diego State put together a 15-4 run. The spurt was sparked when Utah had a near turnover, knocking the ball away from SDSU. But the ball went right to the Aztecs' Kate Eveland, who knocked down a wide-open 10-footer. By the time the San Diego State outburst was over, the Aztecs held their biggest lead of the game, 61-46, with 5:23 to play.
Utah furiously tried to rally. The Utes pulled within eight with 2:32 remaining. Morgan Warburton scored to make it 64-56. But three free throws by Quenese Davis pushed San Diego State's lead back into double digits, 67-56. Utah outscored the Aztecs 10-4 from there, but it wasn't quite enough. Utah got three free throws from Morgan Warburton (Soph., Helper, Utah), after being fouled on a three-point attempt, with 18 seconds left to pull within five at the 18-second mark, 71-66.
But the Utes would never be able to get possession back. They forced two misses, but allowed two offensive rebounds. After a foul with nine seconds left, SDSU missed a pair of free throws, giving Utah one last glimmer of hope. But the Aztecs grabbed that rebound as well, and ran out the clock to ice the victory.
Utah attempted 13 more field goals than San Diego State, but made one fewer. The utes were 24-of-64 from the field, while the Aztecs were 25-of-51. Utah dominated the boards, winning the rebound battle 43-28, including 23-10 at the offensive end. But, in the end, the turnovers and poor shooting were too much to overcome.
Davis led all scorers, putting up 21 points for San Diego State. Jennifer Layton tacked on 15, while Shannon Clay tossed in 12 for the Aztecs. Warburton scored 19 to lead the Utes, but she did so on 6-of-17 from the field. Kalee Whipple (Fr., Hiko, Nev.) and Marie Warner (Jr., Hamilton, Ont.) each scored 14 off the bench for Utah. Whipple tallied the third double-double of her career, grabbing a game-high 11 boards.
Utah is back in action Thursday night at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City. The Utes open a three-game homestand, hosting New Mexico in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
