The Tipoff
The first home conference game of the season is on tap when the University of Utah women's basketball team (12-3, 1-0 Mountain West) hosts the San Diego State Aztecs this Wednesday, Jan. 16. Tipoff in the Huntsman Center is set for 7 p.m. The Utes, who are receiving votes in both polls, are riding a seven-game winning streak. They are on the heels of a 10-point, 60-50 win at Air Force in their last outing on Jan. 9. The Utes haven't lost since their setback at USC on Dec. 3. San Diego State (9-5 overall, 0-2 MWC) has last its last two games, and four of the last five. Last time out, the Aztecs dropped a 60-47 home tilt to conference foe New Mexico. Their last win was a 77-72 victory over Western Michigan on Dec. 30.
This game will be broadcast on KZNS with Chris Tunis calling the action. Live stats and audio are available at www.UtahUtes.com.
Tickets for all home events are available at the Rice-Eccles Stadium box office or by phone at 801-581-UTIX. Tickets can also be purchased online by going to www.UtahUtes.com.
Scouting the Opponent
The Aztecs are looking to break a two-game skid. They haven't won a conference game this season, dropping the opener at TCU, 86-63, and the home conference opener to New Mexico, 60-47. SDSU began the season 8-1, but it has lost four of the last five. Leading the way for the Aztecs are a trio of double-figure scorers. They are paced by Paris Johnson and her 13.9 points per game. She ranks eighth in the league in scoring and ninth in shooting percentage. Allison Duffy and Jene Morris both average 10.9 points per game as well. Paris also owns the top rebounding average (7.0) on the team. Beth Burns is in her second stint on the Aztec bench. This is her third consecutive year there, and her 11th overall. Burns is 175-128 as the Aztec mentor.
A Brief Look at the Series
Wednesday will mark the 37th time that these two conference rivals have tangled on the hardwood. The series began in 1979, and Utah has won in 25 of the 36 meetings. Last year, the two teams split the series. The Utes won in Salt Lake City, 51-48, on Jan. 4, and the Aztecs won on their floor, 71-66, on Feb. 3. That loss snapped Utah's 18-game winning streak over SDSU. Utah is 92-25 all-time in the Mountain West Conference, making it the all-time winningest team in the league.
