The Tipoff
The University of Utah women's basketball team (14-3 overall, 3-0 Mountain West) continues its conference toils when it begins play this week by hosting New Mexico (10-7, 2-2). Tipoff in the Huntsman is at 7 p.m. The Utes, who continue to receive votes in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls, have won nine straight games, and 13 of their last 14. The last loss was more than a month ago. It was a 62-45 road setback to USC back on Dec. 3. In Utah's last outing, it drilled Brigham Young, 80-49, and it netted five points for the Utes in the Deseret First Duel series. The Lobos have won twice in their last five outings, and they are on the heels of a 75-45 road thumping of Air Force.

Scouting the Opponent
The New Mexico Lobos come to town with a 10-7 overall record. They are 2-2 in league play. UNM has won twice in its last five outings with both victories coming in conference action. It topped San Diego State, 60-47, and in its last tilt, thumped Air Force, 75-45. Two Lobo cagers average double-figure scoring numbers, led by Dionne Marsh and her 14.5 points per game. Her scoring average ranks seventh in the MWC. Amy Beggin is second on the team in scoring with 12.8 points. Marsh is the team's top rebounder (6.0 per game). Don Flanagan is in his 13th season on the bench for the Lobos. He owns an all-time mark of 273-120 as their mentor.
A Brief Look at the Series
This week marks the first meeting of the year between the two most successful programs in the Mountain West Conference. Wednesday will be the 60th clash between these storied programs, and it's Utah that owns the all-time series lead, 41-18. Utah has won two of the last three meetings, but UNM won the last contest, 73-65, here in Salt Lake City last February. Utah's last win in the series was a 49-48 triumph in the venerable Pit last January. Its last win in Salt Lake City came in February, 2006, 75-62. Utah is 94-25 all-time in the Mountain West Conference, making it the all-time winningest team in the league.
