SALT LAKE CITY - Utah head women's basketball coach Elaine Elliott has announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Joining Utah for the 2009-10 campaign are Rachel Messer (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Thunder Ridge HS), Diana Rolniak (Aurora, Colo./Regis Jesuit HS), Rita Sitivi (Huntington, Calif./Marina HS) and Taryn Wicijowski (Regina, Sask., Canada/NEDA).
Wicijowski is one of several solid players to come out of Canada for the Utes in the past several years, a list that includes current WNBA player Kim Smith, as well as Shona Thorburn and Jess Perry. She played with the Canadian Junior National Team this summer and is currently in Canada Basketball's National Elite Development Academy. Rolniak is rated as one of the top 100 players in the country - including a ranking of No. 15 among forwards. Messer and Rolniak have each led their high school teams to the state finals while playing together for one of the top AAU clubs in the west, the Mile High Magic. Sitivi has been an all-league selection several times for Marina High School.
"This is an exciting class," Elliott said. "Both Taryn and Diana give us size, athleticism, and smarts. Taryn is extremely physical and Diana is a long, lanky presence. Rachel is a great shooter with equal understanding of the game and Rita is a more powerful, slashing player. I really think the class together, especially with our redshirt freshman Iwa Rodrigues joining them, is a great core for the future."
