SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team opens its season with a scrimmage against Southern Oregon, Saturday, Nov. 8, at 5:00 pm, at the Huntsman Center.
Utah returns three starters from the team that went 16-0 in Mountain West Conference play a season ago, earning a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Ute's leading scorer last season, Morgan Warburton (17.2 points per game), was named the MWC Preseason Player of the Year. Last year's leading rebounder Kalee Whipple was also a preseason all-conference selection. She pulled down 7.3 boards per game. Katie King led the team with 32 blocked shots.
Forwards Halie Sawyer and Cydney Knight, as well as center Deanne Stevenson, will also continue to play a significant role, while newcomers Janita Badon (guard), Mandy Munns (center) and Hannah Stephens (guard) will each look to make their mark.
Southern Oregon is ranked 19th in the Preseason NAIA Top 25 poll. The team opened its season on Nov. 1 with a 112-43 win against Pacific Union. Junior forward Jacki Speer was the Cascade Conference Preseason Player of the Year.
Utah's regular season starts on Nov. 17 at home against Jackson State at 7:00 pm.
