The Tipoff
The No. 18/18-ranked and first-place (Mountain West) University of Utah women's basketball team (22-3 overall, 11-0 MWC) plays one of its last regular-season road games when it battles New Mexico (14-11, 6-6 MWC) in Albuquerque, N.M., on Saturday. Tipoff in the venerable Pit is set for 1 p.m. The Utes are riding a 17-game winning streak, looking to tie the school record with their 18th in a row. The Crimson and White haven't suffered a loss since it stubbed its toe in the 62-45 loss to USC way back on Dec. 3. Last time out, the Utes claimed the Deseret First Duel title when they thumped in-state rival BYU, 82-45. Four Utah players had double-figure scoring numbers, led by the 24-point outburst of Morgan Warburton. New Mexico enters Saturday's tilt having won four if its last six. In the Lobos' last game on Wednesday, they clipped the Air Force Falcons, 79-40.
The game can be followed on KZNS 1280 The Zone, with Chris Tunis calling the action. Live audio and statistics are also available at www.UtahUtes.com.
Scouting the Opponent
The New Mexico Lobos enter Saturday's tilt with a 14-11 overall record. They are 6-6 in league play and are fifth in the MWC. The Lobos have won four of the last six, but they come into Saturday's game having lost to TCU in overtime, 59-51, and beaten Air Force, 79-40. Two Lobo cagers average double-figure scoring numbers, led by Dionne Marsh and her 14.6 points per game. Her scoring average ranks fourth in the MWC. Amy Beggin is second on the team in scoring with 11.8 points. Marsh is the team's top rebounder (6.0 per game). Don Flanagan is in his 13th season on the bench for the Lobos. He owns an all-time mark of 277-124 as their mentor.
A Brief Look at the Series
Saturday's clash boasts the two winningest teams in the MWC. It will be the 61st clash between these storied programs, and it's Utah that owns the all-time series lead, 42-18. Utah has won three of the last four meetings, and the Utes won when they last met on Jan. 23, 60-57. The Utes are 13-14 all-time in Albuquerque, N.M. While they won the last meeting in the Pit, 49-48, in January, 2007, that was their first road win in the series since 2001. Utah is 102-25 all-time in the Mountain West Conference, making it the all-time winningest team in the league.
