The Tipoff
The No. 16/18-ranked and first-place (Mountain West) University of Utah women's basketball team (23-3 overall, 12-0 MWC) begins a two-game homestand on Wednesday when it hosts TCU in the Huntsman Center. Tipoff against the Horned Frogs is set for 7 p.m. The Utes enter the tilt on an 18-game winning streak. The Utes haven't lost since a 62-45 setback to USC back on Dec. 3, and the streak ties the school record for consecutive wins. It is also the second-longest winning streak in the nation. Last time out, Utah rallied from a 12-point deficit in the final four minutes to esape New Mexico with the 57-53 win. Kalee Whipple led the charge in tallying a game-high 21 points. TCU enters Saturday's tilt having won seven in a row. TCU had last Saturday off, but was victorious over Colorado State in its last game, 76-41.
Wednesday will be Dollar Night at the Huntsman. Tickets purchased this week on line or at the box office, and selected concessions items, will be $1.
Tickets for all home events are available at the Rice-Eccles Stadium box office or by phone at 801-581-UTIX. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.UtahUtes.com.
The game can be followed on KZNS 1280 The Zone, with Chris Tunis calling the action. Live audio, video and statistics are also available at www.UtahUtes.com.
Scouting the Opponent
TCU comes to Utah owning a 17-9 overall record. The Horned Frogs' 10-2 league mark is good enough for second, and with four games left, are the closest to catching first-place Utah. TCU had last Saturday off, and enters the game on a seven-game winning streak. The Horned Frogs have been victorious in nine of the last 10. In TCU's last outing, it upended Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo., 76-41. The team averages 69.6 points per contest for the season, which is the top mark in the conference. Leading the team is Adrianne Ross and her 13.6 points per game. That ranks seventh in the conference. Lorie Butler-Rayford is the team's top rebounder with 7.3 per game. Jeff Mittie is in his ninth season at TCU. He is 190-92 as its head coach.
A Brief Look at the Series
Of the eight opponents in the Mountain West Conference, TCU is Utah's least familiar. The two have only locked horns 10 times in their histories, and six of those have come since TCU joined the MWC back in the 2005-06 season. Utah owns the all-time series edge, 6-4. The Utes have won three of the last six meetings, including the last two. Most recently, the Utes overcame a sluggish start, and rode the 30-point effort of Kalee Whipple in beating the Horned Frogs at TCU back in January, 60-50. Utah is 103-25 all-time in the Mountain West Conference, making it the all-time winningest team in the league.
Who's Got Next Game?
Two of the last three games are at home. Next up is a televised home game (The Mtn.) against Wyoming (March 2). Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. The final road date is at Colorado State (March 5) and the regular season finale is when UNLV comes to town (March 8).
