The Tipoff
The No. 20/23 University of Utah women's basketball team (17-3 overall, 7-0 Mountain West) completes its first time through the league when it plays at UNLV on Wednesday. Tipoff in Cox Pavilion is set for 7 p.m. (PT). First-place Utah is riding a 13-game winning streak, not having lost since a 62-45 setback at USC way back on Dec. 3, 2007. Last week, the Utes rode the effort of Co-Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, Morgan Warburton, in upsetting then-No. 15/16 Wyoming, 60-59, on the road. Utah returned home to bounce Colorado State, 68-28. The Rebels enter action this week with a 6-14 overall mark, and with a 2-5 league tally. They are currently seventh in the conference. UNLV is looking to snap a five-game losing streak. Last week, it lost to TCU, 56-38, and at New Mexico, 94-64.
This game will be broadcast on KZNS 1280 The Zone, with Chris Tunis calling the action. Live audio and statistics are available at www.UtahUtes.com.
Scouting the Opponent
UNLV enters the contest with a 6-14 record. It is currently seventh in the Mountain West Conference with a 2-5 league tally. The Rebels have lost five straight games, and eight of their last 10. The last time UNLV was in the win column, it tallied back-to-back victories over Colorado State and Air Force back on Jan. 9 and 12. The Rebel offense features the league's top scorer. Sequoia Holmes averages a league-high 18.0 points per game, connecting on 40.3 percent of her attempts. Shamela Hampton is second on the team with 10.9 points. Holmes is the team's top rebounder, clearing 7.1 boards per game. Her rebounding average ranks fourth in the conference. Regina Miller is in her 10th season at the helm at UNLV. She is 173-116 as its head coach.
A Brief Look at the Series
Wednesday marks the 35th time that these two programs will have locked horns on the women's hardwood. Utah owns the all-time series lead 23-11. In fact, the Utes have won eight straight over the Rebels. The Crimson and White swept the two-game series last year. Utah won in January, 2007, in Las Vegas, 49-37, and on its home court the ensuing February, 70-55. The last time UNLV won in the series was in 2004. They claimed the 68-60 overtime win in Salt Lake City. The last Rebel win in Las Vegas was a 57-38 home triumph in 2002. Utah is 98-25 all-time in the Mountain West Conference, making it the all-time winningest team in the league.
