SALT LAKE CITY -¬ Utah senior Leilani Mitchell has been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week.
Mitchell, hailing from Kennewick, Wash., led the Utes to the program's second-ever undefeated conference season (16-0) last week. Against Colorado State and UNLV, Mitchell averaged a team-best 18.5 points, 8.0 assists and 8.0 rebounds. She dished out 16 assists, compared to just two turnovers. Against the Rams, the guard scored 23 points on 7-of-17 shooting (.412), and was 3-for-6 from three-point range. She also had seven rebounds and two steals. Mitchell was one rebound shy of a triple-double against UNLV, scoring 14 points, distributing 13 assists and pulling down nine boards. She shot 5-for-10 from the field (.500), and 3-for-6 from the three-point range, while committing no turnovers.
Mitchell ranks fourth in scoring average with 16.4 point and leads the league in assists, averaging 7.75 per game. This marks Mitchell's sixth player of the week honor.
The 5-5 point guard shares this week's award with New Mexico's Dionne Marsh.
Mitchell and the Utah team return to action in the quarterfinals of the MWC Tournament on Wednesday. Tip is set for 4 p.m. (PT).
