The Tipoff
The No. 12/14-ranked, and the No. 1-seeded, University of Utah women's basketball team (27-3, 16-0 Mountain West Conference) makes its foray into the post season this week when it plays in the Mountain West Conference Tournament. The Utes will play the winner of the Colorado State/UNLV play-in game on Wednesday, March 12, at 4 p.m. (PT). The team wrapped up the regular season on a 22-game winning streak, and in doing so, the Utes went a perfect 16-0 in league play. They are the second team in league history to go undefeated in loop action. It equals the 14-0 mark that this same program established back in the 2000-01 season. The Utes haven't lost since the 62-45 setback at USC back on Dec. 3. Last week, the Utes eked out a 63-58 win at Colorado State, and pummeled the UNLV Rebels in the regular-season finale, 82-46. Both CSU and UNLV backed into the tournament on a loss. On Saturday, CSU dropped a 76-45 decision at New Mexico while UNLV fell to Utah.
The game can be followed on KALL 700 Sports, with Chris Tunis calling the action. All of the games will be televised as well. The quarterfinals and semifinals will air on Then Mtn., while the finals will be broadcast on Versus. Live audio and statistics are also available at www.UtahUtes.com.
Scouting No. 8 UNLV
UNLV enters the tournament with an 8-21 record. It finished the season tied for seventh with a 4-12 league tally. However, it fell into the play-in game with Colorado State because it's RPI was lower than Air Force's. The Rebels come to the MWC Tournament having lost five straight games, and six of their last seven. The last time UNLV was in the win column, it tallied a 73-68 overtime win over BYU in Las Vegas on Feb. 16. The Rebel offense features the league's top scorer. Sequoia Holmes averages a league-high 18.7 points per game, connecting on 40.1 percent of her attempts. Shamela Hampton is second on the team with 12.0 points. Holmes is the team's top rebounder, clearing 7.3 boards per game. Her rebounding average ranks third in the conference. Regina Miller is in her 10th season at the helm at UNLV. She is 175-124 as its head coach.
Scouting No. 9 Colorado State
Colorado State, 2-27 overall and 0-16 in Mountain West Conference play, comes into the tournament mired in a 20-game losing streak. The Rams have actually lost 23 of their last 24, and their last win came on Dec. 4 when they topped Pacific at home, 84-77. CSU not only went winless in conference play, it didn't win a road contest all season, going 0-15 when away from Fort Collins, Colo. Sara Hunter is team's top offensive threat, averaging a team-high 9.9 points per game. Juanise Cornell adds 7.5 points per game, and she is the team's top rebounder with 6.8 caroms per outing. Jen Warden is in her third season at the helm at CSU. She is 19-68 as its head coach.
Scouting the Rest of the Field
Utah enters the MWC Tournament as its No. 1 seed. TCU earned the second seed and Wyoming is the third seed. Following the Cowgirls are No. 4 New Mexico, No. 5 San Diego State, No. 6 BYU, No. 7 Air Force. No. 8 UNLV will play No. 9 Colorado State in the play-in game on Tuesday night. The winner will play Utah in the quarterfinals. TCU is 20-10 overall and 13-3 in league play. It comes to Las Vegas on a three-game winning streak. Wyoming had Saturday off, and is 24-5 and 12-4. It fell to Utah in its second-to-last game but toppled BYU in its regular-season finale. New Mexico has a 17-12 mark and it finished MWC play 9-7. It has won three straight, including a 76-45 home thumping of Colorado State on Saturday. San Diego State and BYU own identical 7-9 league tallies. But, SDSU is 16-12 overall while BYU is 13-15. SDSU has won four in a row heading into the post season, while BYU has dropped its last four games. Air Force, which won its first-ever tournament game last year, is 10-18 on the season, 4-12 in MWC play. The Falcons lost the last two games of the season.
A Brief Look at the Series
Should Utah meet UNLV, it will be the second such time in five days. It will also be the 37th time that these two programs will have battled on the women's hardwood. Utah has won 10 straight, and it owns the all-time series lead, 25-11. However, in MWC Tournament play, Utah owns the 3-1 series lead. Utah swept the 2007-08 season series. The Utes out-lasted the Rebels, 82-53, when they met in Las Vegas on Feb. 6. Utah also claimed the 82-46 victory in Salt Lake last Saturday. UNLV's last "W" in the series was in Salt Lake City, 68-60 (OT), in March of 2004.
If Utah should lock horns with the Rams again, it will be the second time in seven days. It will also be the 68th meeting between Utah and CSU on the women's hardwood. Utah owns the all-time series lead, 54-13. Utah and CSU have never met in the MWC Tournament. The Utes have won the last 10 contests, including both games in the 2007-08 series. The Utes thumped the Rams, 68-28, in Salt Lake City on Feb. 2. However, the Utes eked out a 63-58 win in Fort Collins last Wednesday. The last Ram victory in the series was back in February, 2003. They claimed the 56-44 win on their home court.
Utah is 107-25 all-time in the Mountain West Conference, making it the all-time winningest team in the league. The Utes are 13-6 all-time in conference tournament play. Their 13 wins are second to BYU and New Mexico, both with 14.
