SALT LAKE CITY - Former University of Utah standouts Leilani Mitchell and Kim Smith are cutting their professional teeth in the WNBA this summer. Mitchell is coming off the bench for the New York Liberty while Smith is one of the reserves for the Sacramento Monarchs. Both Mitchell and Smith have played in all games thus far, and are averaging about 10 minutes per outing.
Mitchell has played in four regular-season games for the Liberty, averaging 9.5 minutes, 2.5 points and 2.0 assists per game. Mitchell is also shooting .400 from the floor. A third team All-American last year at Utah, she was drafted in the third round by the Phoenix Mercury. Mitchell was traded to the New York Liberty on May 7 for a third-round draft pick in 2009.
Kim Smith, another former Utah All-American, is still playing for the Sacramento Monarchs. A first-round draft pick of the Monarchs in 2006, she is coming off of an injury-riddled 2007 season and is averaging 10.4 minutes this year. The Monarchs forward is currently putting up 2.6 points per game and grabbing 1.8 rebounds.
