SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team receives its first bye of the Mountain West Conference campaign on Wednesday before returning to action on Saturday, Jan. 24, to host UNLV in the Huntsman Center at 3:00 p.m. The game will be aired live on 1280 AM with play-by-play from Chris Tunis, while live stats and video are available at UtahUtes.com.
Utah is coming off a 74-48 victory over Colorado State. Kalee Whipple led Utah with 20 points while Morgan Warburton and Katie King each had 16 points. Halie Sawyer recorded her third double-double of the season with a team-high 10 rebounds and 12 points.
Utah took a 23-0 lead against CSU before Meghan Heimstra scored Colorado State's first basket of the game at the 11:25 mark. The Rams opened the game 0-for-12 from the field, including 0-2 from the free-throw line. The Utes would hold CSU to 20-percent shooting in the first half (6-of-30). Utah opened the second half on a 7-0 run and soon began to rotate in players off the bench. The team had a season-high 14 steals in the contest. The Utes largest lead of the game was 37 points. Colorado State was held to 30-percent shooting from the floor.
Warburton was named MWC Player of the Week for her efforts against both CSU and Air Force. She led Utah with 18.5 points per game, a 73.7 shooting average and seven three-pointers, including an 87.5 shooting percentage from behind the arc.
UNLV has struggled this season, going 8-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Rebels are coming off their first MWC victory of the 2009 campaign, a 71-64 decision at Wyoming. UNLV faces BYU in Las Vegas before traveling to Salt Lake City for Saturday's game.
Shamela Hampton leads the Rebels with 14.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. Erica Helms is averaging 11.8 points per game while Jamie Smith is scoring 10.6 per game and averaging 8.5 rebounds per game.
