Scouting Brigham Young
Brigham Young is 13-4 overall, with a 3-2 record in the conference. The Cougars are 1-2 in their last three games after starting the year with a 12-2 record.
Mindy Nielson is averaging 11.5 points per game while Shawnee Slade is also in double digit scoring with 10.8 points per game. Cassie King is leading the team with 6.1 rebounds per game.
BYU's strength is its depth, with 13 players having seen action in at least 10 games this season.
Deseret First Duel
The winner of Wednesday's game between BYU and Utah earns five points in the Deseret First Duel rivalry series between Utah and BYU. Utah currently leads the 65.5-point series 16-6, with wins in football and women's volleyball (2).
The rivalry series includes competition in the 12 sports the two universities compete in head-to-head during regular-season play. The Deseret First Duel will use a system that awards points to the winner of each head-to-head competition. Points won by the individual sports will count toward each school's overall total. In women's basketball, BYU and Utah face each other twice, with each game worth five points.
The Utah vs. BYU rivalry is one of the oldest and strongest in the country. In November 2005, the Wall Street Journal rated the rivalry the fourth best in college athletics.
Last Time Out
Utah remained undefeated in Mountain West Conference action and extended its winning streak to eight games with a 67-50 victory over UNLV on Saturday, Jan. 24.
Kalee Whipple led the Utes with 22 points from the floor. Whipple had 14 points in the first half, nearly matching UNLV's first-half total of 16 points. She also had eight rebounds with three steals and five assists. Katie King had 15 points while Morgan Warburton was also in double figure scoring with 12 points. Halie Sawyer led Utah with 10 rebounds.
Utah quickly jumped out to a 14-5 lead over the first five minutes of the game and went on an 18-6 run over the next 10 minutes to take a 30-11 lead. The Rebels ended the half with several buckets and Utah held a 38-16 lead at halftime. UNLV shot 25.9-percent from the floor in the first half.
The Utes had their largest lead of the game - 29 points - early in the second half. However, UNLV rallied as the second half wore on. A 14-2 Rebel run over five minutes that began at the 16 minute mark helped swing the momentum in UNLV's direction. UNLV would out-score Utah in the second half, 34-29.
