Last Time Out
Utah (7-6) defeated Norfolk State (0-8) Friday evening at the Jon M. Huntsman Center by a score of 79-40. The Utes were led by junior forward Halie Sawyer with 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field.
Utah shot 51% from the floor (26-of-51) and grabbed a season-high 45 rebounds. The Utes held Norfolk State to just 23.2% from the field, their best defensive performance of the season, while blocking five shots and making 10 steals in the contest.
Utah held NSU scoreless for the first 9:40 of the game, building a 19-0 lead before Danelle Tate knocked down a free throw at the 10:20 mark. The Utes did not allow a field goal for the first 13:05 of the contest, when Tate scored a layup.
The 39-point margin of victory was Utah's largest since defeating UC Irvine, 91-50, Nov. 15, 2007.
Whipple Named MWC Player of the Week
Utah junior forward Kalee Whipple has been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week. She shares the honor with San Diego State's Jené Morris. It is Whipple's fifth career weekly honor.
Whipple, from Hiko, Nev., played an integral role in Utah's two wins last week against Southern California (87-77) and Norfolk State (79-40). She scored a career-high 31 points against USC, going 11-for-18 from the field and posting season-highs in field goal (.611) and three-point field goal (.455) percentage. She was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line, stepping up to take all four free throws in the final four minutes of the game. Whipple also pulled down seven rebounds, dished out four assists and had three steals.
