SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team enters the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the Mountain West Conference Tournament. The Utes play their first game on Friday, March 13, at noon.
The opponent will be determined on Wednesday. Utah will play either No. 4 seed New Mexico, No. 5 seed Wyoming, No. 8 seed Colorado State or No. 9 seed Air Force.
This season, the MWC has altered the bracket to give the higher seeds an increased advantage. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds do not play until the semifinals and would only have to win two games to win the tournament. Previously, teams would have to win at least three games to win the tournament. Teams seeded lower than third will have to win four games to take the tournament title.
With a 57-54 victory over New Mexico on March 4, Utah clinched its seventh regular-season title in the 10 years of the Mountain West Conference. The Utes share the title with San Diego State, but are the No. 1 seed in the tournament based on tiebreakers after an evaluation of head-to-head matchups of conference opponents.
Although Utah has traditionally been dominant in the regular season, they have only won two MWC Tournament championships - in 2000 and 2006. The Utes have played in the championship game four times (2000, 2004, 2005 and 2006) and have been the No. 1 seed four times (2000, 2001, 2003 and 2008). Utah is 13-7 in the history of the tournament.
Senior guard Morgan Warburton was named as the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, as selected by the coaches, as the MWC handed out their yearly all-conference honors on Monday. The senior guard is the Utah's fifth overall and second straight MWC Player of the Year, joining Amy Ewert (2001), Kim Smith (2003-06), Shona Thorburn (2005) and Leilani Mitchell (2008).
Warburton was also named a first-team All-MWC selection for the third year in a row.
Junior forward Kalee Whipple was named first-team All-MWC for the first time after earning second-team honors in 2008 and being named to the third team as a freshman.
Senior forward Katie King earned All-MWC honors for the first time in her career. She was named to the second team.
