SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team closes out the regular season against TCU on Saturday, March 7, at noon (CT). The game will be televised live on CBSC with commentary from Jason Knapp and Brenda VanLengen, while it is also available on KALL 700 radio with play-by-play from Chris Tunis.
With a 57-54 victory against New Mexico, Utah (13-2) clinched at least a share of the conference championship. A win against TCU would give the Utes the outright title. It is the seventh time in the 10 years of the Mountain West Conference that Utah has held at least a share of the regular season championship.
The Utes have also clinched the No. 1 seed in the Mountain West Conference tournament next week with the win. Although a Ute loss and a San Diego State win on Saturday would create a tie for the regular-season championship, Utah holds the tiebreaker in the standings for tournament seeding after an evaluation of head-to-head matchups of conference opponents. Utah will play its first tournament game on Friday, March 13, at noon.
The Horned Frogs are 19-9 on the year and 11-4 in the MWC. TCU has third-place in the conference locked up. They are coming off a bye after falling to San Diego State, 68-63, in their last game on Feb. 28.
Helena Sverrisdottir is one of the premier players in the conference, ranking third in the MWC in scoring with 15.8 points per game and leading TCU with 7.1 rebounds per game. She also has 135 assists, 45 steals and is shooting .446 from the field. TK Lafleur is scoring 14.7 points per game and has 60 steals while Emily Carter is averaging 11.6 points per game.
The Utes defeated TCU, 73-63, in Salt Lake City back on Feb. 4. Kalee Whipple (21 points, 11 rebounds) and Katie King (11 points, 12 rebounds) each had double-doubles for Utah in the game. Sverrisdottir scored 27 points for TCU.
