SALT LAKE CITY - While the rest of the Mountain West Conference begins league play on Wednesday, the Utah women's basketball team takes advantage of a bye the first week to play in-state rival Utah Valley on Jan. 6. Radio is available on KALL 700 AM while live stats and a video feed can be found at UtahUtes.com.
Utah (8-4) is on a four-game winning streak after Kalee Whipple led Utah to a 72-58 victory over SMU on Saturday, Jan. 2. Whipple is averaging 26.0 points in her last three games and has moved into the MWC scoring lead with 17.6 points per game this season. Janita Badon had her first career double-double in the win with 15 points and 10 rebounds. SMU was receiving votes in the coaches' poll before the loss.
Utah Valley has struggled this season with a 3-12 record, including dropping its last seven games. Julie Smith has missed the last three games but should return against Utah. Smith is averaging 16.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Jenna Johnson is averaging 8.8 points per game. UVU's third-leading scorer, Kayla Burningham, will likely miss Wednesday's contest, she is averaging 7.3 points per game.
Utah leads the all-time series against Utah Valley, 2-0. The last meeting between the two teams was back in 2006 in Orem, as the Utes squeaked out a 70-68 double-overtime win.
