Interim head women's basketball coach Anthony Levrets recently addressed the media at Utah's annual basketball media day. Below are quotes from his portion of the press conference.
Opening statement:
This is a transitional year for us in a lot of ways. Obviously the big one is Elaine not being around. We have 14 on our roster. 11 of those kids are freshmen and sophomores, one junior, two seniors, one of who has never really played because of knee injuries, and then a senior transfer from Stanford who has also been injured who has not had a lot of meaningful minutes as far as seniors would go. We are new, young, and talented and I have no idea about our team."
On the newcomers who have stood out early:
Michelle Harrison, the transfer from Stanford, she is a Utah kid. We have known about her for a long time and we have played them every year. She is learning our system; it is completely different than what Stanford does. So for her it has been a learning curve again, I wish we had her for more than one year, that's for sure. She has been playing very well. Also our freshman from Canada, Michelle Plouffe. She has a ton of international experience and has also played very well. She has been a pleasant surprise as a freshman for us.
On the schedule:
It's brutal. We play Stanford, Arkansas, and Washington at home. We play Penn St., Wisconsin-Green Bay and Hartford in a tournament. We are at Mississippi State and SMU. I did the schedule, so there is nobody to blame but myself. The Mountain West Conference is a very good conference in women's basketball. We have had the opportunity to win it seven of the 11 years of the leagues existence. That's our focus, how do we get good enough to be good enough to win that league. I think playing the preseason schedule we play will prepare us for that.
Looking to the future:
We will worry about next year and future years when future years get here. Right now we have to get experience. Practice this year is a little different this year for us. Women's basketball changed their opening practice date. We started Oct. 3 this year so we have had 16 practices already. We are in the middle of a couple days off. We know a little bit more, but we are still so young. I think that we will play ten, maybe 11 players, early. Obviously we won't play that many as the year goes on. With so many young people and them all being so close we have to give them all an opportunity early to see who can play in games and who can't. It's going to take us a little while to shake some of that out. Hopefully we are good enough by the end of the year and we can worry about next year, next year.
On team leaders:
Taryn Wicijowski and Janita Badon. We have not named them captains or voted on captains, but they lead because they are born leaders. Our kids follow them and they have worked incredibly hard at everything they do. We have not had any issues with leadership because they have all just followed along.
On being head coach:
In my own head it has probably been different. My `not sleeping at night' thoughts. But as far as work load, Elaine gave me a ton of stuff to do. She allowed me a lot of freedom as far as game planning and planning of our team and what we ran and how we did it. So that part has not been that much different. But my thought process in my own head of what the responsibilities are of leading this program and how to get us better are different. All of those things are a different thought process.
On Elaine Elliott:
She is a really good friend, so that makes it easier. I also worked on the men's side with two guys that are in the hall of fame. They all have been the same. You have to prepare day-to-day. Not think about what last year was, what next year is going to be and worry about this play and today. I am really glad we are not playing against her team. We are not preparing for her. We are preparing for Stanford, SMU, Wyoming and the teams on our schedule. Fortunately she is not coaching any of them. I am not thinking about that too much, except how do we get this team as good as this group can be so we can win this league by the time the year is over.
On being interim coach:
I don't think about it. I only think about it when you ask me about it. I have a great relationship with Dr. Hill. I meet with him weekly; we spend a lot of time together. Our job right now is to get this group of kids to be as good as they can be so that we are prepared to play our first game against SMU on Nov. 12. And then we will worry about the next game after that. That's the only way you can prepare a team. If you start worrying about the things that you can't control than you aren't going to be good at the things you can. We are going to worry about what is going on right now.
