COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah point guard Janita Badon has been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for games played through Nov. 14. It is the first career league weekly honor for Badon.
Badon, a 5-7 junior from Portland, Ore., hit the game-winning basket with 4.2 seconds left to give the Utes a 44-43 win over SMU on the road in Utah's season opener. Badon was seven of 10 from the field, hitting many of her shots at crucial moments in the game, and led Utah with a team-high 15 points. She scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half, including back-to-back baskets to cut the SMU lead from 26-21 to 26-25 with 13:05 left in the game. With 52 seconds left in the game, Badon hit a jumper to tie the game at 42.
Utah (1-0) returns to the court on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at Weber State.
