Utah women's basketball assistant coach Matt Legerski tips off a new Coaching Insider series on UtahUtes.com, where the coaches share their thoughts on the season.
To our loyal Ute fans, proud Ute alumni, and future Utes,
We returned to practice today after having the weekend off. It was the first time the team had consecutive days off since the holiday break in December. It was a good time for a weekend off as the team needed to rest physically, recharge emotionally, and most importantly needed to "catch up" on their studies.
Last time out...
Coming off of an emotional two games, winning versus Wyoming and then painfully losing to BYU, this team had a huge breakthrough in going on the road at CSU and coming home with the "W". Playing on the road has been quite a challenge for our team and it was great to see them stay together as a group, battle through adversity, play with passion, and make plays down the stretch to pull out a road win. Not only was the CSU win important in providing us with confidence when playing away from the comfort of the Huntsman Center, but it also pulled us back to .500 in league play heading into the second half of the conference season.
A look ahead...
League-leading TCU comes to town this week and I encourage all of Ute Nation to come out and support the Utes Wednesday night. TCU brings a 7-2 conference record and are in the Top 25. Over the weekend the conference race tightened up as New Mexico earned a big road win at San Diego State and both BYU and Wyoming maintained their position with home wins. There are now six teams within two games of first-place in the standings. We, however, cannot look to what happens with the teams that are ahead of us or what happens to the teams that are behind us. We can only focus on the team that is directly in front of us. We started that approach today with a very spirited practice. You could definitely tell that the days off were of benefit to everyone.
We are excited about the opportunity that is in front of us starting with Wednesday night's game and I believe our best basketball has yet to be played. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to seeing and hearing from all of you.
Yours in Utah Hoops,
Matt
