SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team takes its five-game winning streak down to Provo, Utah, on Wednesday, March 3, to face Brigham Young at 7:00 p.m. With two games left in the regular season and the Utes and Cougars tied for second in the Mountain West Conference with 9-5 records, the game has the potential to affect the seeding for the MWC Tournament, which begins on March 8. Both teams are battling for a bye that comes with being the first, second or third seed in the tournament.
Utah handed Wyoming its first home conference loss this season on Sunday, Feb. 28, behind 17 points from Kalee Whipple. Whipple made the game-winning free throws and had a block and a defensive rebound in the final 40 seconds of the game.
BYU is 18-8 overall and 9-5 in the conference. The Cougars have dropped their last two games, falling at San Diego State, 73-71, on Feb. 24 and at New Mexico, 62-30, on Feb. 27. Mindy Bonham leads BYU in scoring with 11.4 points per game while Coriann Wood is averaging 10.3 points per game. Kristen Riley is pulling down 5.7 rebounds per game.
The Cougars got the best of the Utes back on Jan 30 in Salt Lake City, 69-52. Haley Hall exploded for 24 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars while Utah was led by 16 points and 11 rebounds from Whipple.
The winner of Wednesday's game earns five points in the Deseret First Duel rivalry series between Utah and BYU. BYU currently leads the 61-point series, 27-10. The men's basketball game, which is held at the same time in Salt Lake City, is also worth five points.
